Shabbat Shalom
From Rav Tomer Ronen
When Hashem asks Bnei Yisrael to contribute towards the building of the mishkan in this week's parsha, Terumah, He chooses a very interesting and telling word when describing the reason for his request. Hashem says:
וְעָשׂוּ לִי, מִקְדָּשׁ; וְשָׁכַנְתִּי, בְּתוֹכָם

"And make me a mikdash, and I will dwell within them." We would have expected Him to use the word " betocho" ("in it"), referring to the mishkan, rather than " betocham" ("in them"), referring to Bnei Yisrael.

This word choice sends an important message about the purpose of building the mishkan. Bnei Yisrael might assume that in building the mishkan, they are creating a physical place for Hashem to "live." However, the language Hashem uses to describe the purpose of this project clarifies that the act of giving actually creates a place for Hashem to dwell within each person who contributes.

When I learned this with the children this morning, they asked, "What does it mean for Hashem to live inside a person?" We discussed this idea and the students had some important insights about what it means and how we bring it about. For example, they shared that every time we do a mitzvah or say tefillah, we make room for Hashem inside our hearts and souls. At the most basic level, w e can build a home for Hashem within ourselves through basic emunah , faith. What a powerful message this is for our children - that Hashem can dwell inside each one of them, all the time, through the strength of their belief in Him and their faith.

Over the coming weeks, you will hear more from me about BPY's core values and mission, including our commitment to d eveloping each child's ahavat and yirat Hashem. This value is really about emunah and setting each child on a path towards a lifelong relationship with, and love of, his or her Creator, one of the most important things we strive to achieve at BPY. Towards that end, I suggested to the children this morning that we read the pasuk referenced above as speaking to each one of us individually, here and now. Hashem asks of each one of us to build a mikdash in our hearts, that He may dwell within each one of us, always.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rav Tomer Ronen

Resilience Revisited Part II
by Stanley Fischman
In my last column, I wrote about the challenges children face and some recommendations to help them strengthen the quality of their resiliency. I noted that these challenges actually grow more severe as young people enter the artificial world of university life.

In a recent New York Times column entitled, "The Tales of Super Survivors" (November 24, 2015), David Brooks describes individuals who bounce back from difficult experiences and enjoy post-traumatic growth. Referring specifically to a study of 9/11 first...

Other highlights of the fair will include:
