Unfortunately, the facts about elder abuse are not fully known. There has not been enough research done to create a comprehensive understanding of what little data has been collected. Most data has been done in specific areas on the individual state level and not officially combined.
It is, therefore, estimated that in this country alone, there are 5 million older adults who fall victim to elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation every year. Two thirds of these victims are women - and for every reported case, there is believed to be 24 cases that may go unreported.
