Educator Searcheducatorsearch
The search to find an educator to replace Rabbi Tom when he takes the position of Senior Rabbi in July is now underway. The CBI Board has directed Rabbi Tom to form a search committee for this purpose and to do its work with a combination of speed and care. The committee consists of Dan Lefkowitz, Rachel Skadron, Nancy Summers, Jill Clark and Lindsay Rubin. The intention of the committee is to identity and hire an educator who will provide oversight of the Religious School including Hebrew instruction, Bar and Bat Mitzvah training, the post-Bar/Bat Mitzvah program, and the youth groups. It is expected that the educator will  provide CBI with vision, coordination and integration of all adult and family learning, including the Tikkun Middot initiative, the hiring, supervision, support, and training of teachers, and will work constructively with other CBI staff and lay leaders.

Although, the applicants for this position need not be rabbis (or cantors), past experience suggests that most applicants are likely to be rabbis. If it turns out that the most desirable applicant is a rabbi, such an individual would allow CBI to shape the position accordingly and maintain a level of rabbinic availability and service similar to what the congregation has become accustomed.

In the future, following the rabbinic transition and when time permits, a broad process of conversation and deep listening will provide more thorough consideration of the Educator role at CBI than is currently possible. For now, given limited time, the search underway is designed to be completed in six weeks or so.

Meanwhile, all members are invited and encouraged to be part of the process. In fact, we have already received applications and the first candidate, Rachel Schmelkin, will be visiting CBI this coming weekend, informally on Shabbat and, formally, on Sunday, February 14. Rachel is currently completing her studies at the Hebrew Union College in New York and will receive rabbinic ordination this coming May. She will spend Sunday morning in the Religious School, teaching in some classes and observing the assembly. Immediately following the assembly at 10:20 AM, there will be an opportunity to meet Rachel and hear about her vision for Jewish education at CBI.

Your attendance at that session with Rabbi Schmelkin is heartily encouraged!

- Rabbi Tom, on behalf of the Educator Search Committee

Mimiddahddah of the Month: Chesed/Lovingkindness
Greet each person with a smile.

When I was young, I admired clever people. Now that I am old, I admire kind people.  - Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel (of blessed memory).

To explore the middah of Chesed (Lovingkindness), you may want to try the following suggestion from the Tikkun Middot Project Adult Curriculum:

This week, direct your attention, as much as possible, to situations in which others may need a hand. Try to do this with one person per day and consciously choose the person on whom you will focus. The goal is not simply to notice, but to also pay attention to what it is like for you to notice where others struggle and may need a hand. It is ok to ask the person what they need. Pay attention that you are not projecting your own needs.

Camp CBI 2016 Registration - Now Open!
Camp CBI is a place for campers to create positive Jewish experiences which will last a lifetime. The Camp offers an enriched atmosphere in which Jewish themes and activities are interwoven into programming through music, art, dance, Shabbat celebrations, and more.

School-aged campers spend their day both inside and out playing sports, having fun with science experiments, art, martial arts, nature activities, Jewish cooking, jewelry making, drama, swimming at local pools, weekly field trips and more. Preschool-aged kids splash in wading pools and explore the wonders of the outdoors. Campers also participate in morning sing-a-longs, social action projects, weekly challah making, storytelling and Shabbat celebrations. Each day the focus is on creativity, skill building, and developing a sense of Jewish community.

As part of the Ozrim group, 7, 8 and 9th graders will enjoy a combination of travel, community service, learning, and working with our younger campers. Exciting weekly field trips and day-long mitzvah projects add to the fun.

The Noar Teen Traveling Camp will be back again for students entering grades 7, 8, and 9 and will take place from June 20 - June 24. Noar joins CBI teens with their peers from Jewish communities around Virginia for a fantastic 1-week overnight camp adventure, increasing their awareness of and identification with Judaism. Trips to Kings Dominion, water parks, hiking, a high ropes course, mitzvah projects and more are just a few examples of some of the activities planned. A detailed schedule will be available in May.

Our 6-week camp takes place June 6 through July 15th. Sign up for as many weeks as you'd like!  Before and after camp care will also be available. Babysitting for younger campers ages 2 - Kindergarten will run after our 6-week camp period ends.

Click here to sign-up before April 15 and save the $30 registration fee. If you have questions or would like more information about Camp CBI, contact Shelby Apple, Camp Director at   [email protected]   or Jill Clark, Preschool Director at
