NYCOMEC BLUE Osteopathic Recognition Webinar Series

NYCOMEC now has another way to help you achieve Osteopathic Recognition!  On Wednesday, March 16, and every other Wednesday following, NYCOMEC will host a live webinar series offering 30-minute presentations on a wide range of osteopathic medicine topics. The webinar features  a variety of prominent guest speakers whose didactic sessions are designed for both faculty and trainees.

Request for Housestaff Manuals

In preparing for NYCOMEC's OPTI Inspection, scheduled for April 19-20, 2016, we have requested each Member Institution to please forward to us their most recent Housestaff Manuals.

If you have not already done so, please forward electronic copies to Sharon Player or mail copies to NYCOMEC, NYIT, Northern Blvd, Room 314B, Old Westbury, NY 11568. Thank you for your prompt attention! 
NYCOMEC Programs Successful in Match

The results of the 2016 AOA Match were released on February 8, 2016, and a majority of NYCOMEC programs successfully filled their positions, including Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, OB/GYN, Orthopedic Surgery, and Pediatrics. NYCOMEC staff will continue to assist our Member Institutions in recruiting trainees to fill any open positions.

NYCOMEC Blue Osteopathic Recognition Webinar Series:  New Opportunities for Scholarly Activity 

NYCOMEC is extending an invitation to all faculty members and staff of our member institutions to participate as presenters in our new NYCOMEC Blue Osteopathic Recognition Webinar series. The webinar series consist of 30-minute presentations on any aspect of medicine, and may include medical lectures, case presentations, clinical reviews, etc. Each presentation should incorporate some aspect pertaining to osteopathic medicine, but topics are not limited to osteopathic practices and principles.      
The NYCOMEC Blue Osteopathic Recognition Webinar Series offers many benefits. It serves as a learning mechanism for faculty and trainees, while also providing an opportunity for faculty and staff to participate in scholarly activity.

Faculty Development Program

Henry Rosenberg, M.D., Director of Medical Education and Clinical Research, Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston, New Jersey, will present on Wednesday, March 16, 2016, a faculty development program titled Understanding the ACGME Approach to Resident and Program Evaluations.  The learning objectives for the program are:
  • Describe the concept of milestones in resident evaluation
  • Implement resident evaluation using the ACGME milestones
  • Describe the different roles and functions of the clinical competence committee and the program evaluation committee
  • Discuss the importance of the ACGME annual, confidential resident survey
  • Understand the Clinical Learning Environment Review and its significance

Trainee OMM Workshop

An OMM Workshop for NYCOMEC Trainees took place on February 6, 2016, at NYITCOM-Old Westbury Campus.  Daniel Van Arsdale, D.O. , Program Director, and  Francis Yoo, D.O. , Associate Program Director, both from Southampton Hospital, Integrated Family Medicine/NMM Department, helped the trainees enhance their OMM skills on diagnosis and treatment for both inpatient and outpatient settings.

The participants were trainees and faculty from Coney Island Hospital, Flushing Hospital Medical Center, Nassau University Medical Center, Plainview Hospital, South Nassau Communities Hospital, and Wyckoff Heights Medical Center.
AZCOM Hospital Day 

NYCOMEC staff attended a national recruiting event hosted by Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine on January 29, 2016, in Phoenix, AZ. Lynn Mark, D.O., spoke with many of the 350 students attending the event and distributed NYCOMEC's brochures, which describe the OPTI's programs and member institutions. There was  great interest among the students about NYCOMEC programs.

Jerry Balentine, D.O., Vice President of Medical Affairs and Global Health, NYITCOM, shared his practical business experience with third- and fourth-year medical students, as a featured guest in two podcast interviews on Health Thought Leaders One-to-One

"The National Collegiate Athletic Association should implement a specific, evidence-based strategy that ensures students that have suffered a concussion can return to learn" wrote Hallie Zwibel, D.O., Director,  NYIT Center for Sports Medicine and Alice Heron-Burke, Senior Director of Counseling, NYIT, in a Newsweek op-ed published on January 6, 2016.  Click here to read the Newsweek op-ed.

NYCOMEC and NYIT Center for Sports Medicine will cosponsor a Sports Medicine Conference: Concussions on April 6, 2016.

Gabrielle Rozenberg Named TouroCOM-Harlem's Student D.O. of the Year

In announcing the 2016 Student D.O. of the Year, TouroCOM-Harlem's Dean Robert Goldberg, D.O., recognized Gabrielle Rozenberg "as a role model for all students." 

Dr. Goldberg added: "Gabrielle came to TouroCOM with undergraduate distinctions and she has demonstrated an exceptional experience in leadership, service, community service and research at local, state and national levels".  To read more please click here.
