Locally Made & Handcrafted Metal
Annika Quinn Jewelry, as displayed in the UMOCA Art Shop
Salt Lake City native Annika Quinn DiMeo translates the enchantment of working with metal into her
striking signature style, imbuing old-world craft and modern minimalism into each loud knuckle ring, dainty necklace, and daring wrist cuff.
DiMeo is one of 30 local artists and makers featured in the UMOCA Art Shop, which traverses one-of-a-kind ceramics, delicate paintings, bold prints, and more. There's sure to be something for everyone this season. Kick off your holiday shopping at UMOCA and support the local arts community.

N O T E F R O M T H E E D I T O R
As the year comes to a close, we're reflecting on the idea of collection.
Collection, like our Art Shop with its various locally made objects, or like
how Mel Ziegler collects the sticks he uses to play fetch with his pit bull, Ben Gaulon with broken Kindles, Jean Richardson with orange life vests.
Those collected objects become striking and thought-provoking works of art, and in the same way, supporting and advocating for contemporary art is a collective effort.
H
ere on the cusp of UMOCA's 85th year running, we're t
hinking back to 2015's milestones: the opening of the A-I-R Space, the creation of Out Loud and SENSE/ABILITY, the countless artistic projects and collaborations.
As we continue in these efforts to make the arts more accessible, we want to say thank you! It's only through your enduring
support, energy, and engagement that we are able to make all of this possible.

This #GivingTuesday, Support Contemporary.
Since 1931, UMOCA has helped to connect the Salt Lake community with local, national, and international contemporary artists. We've shown how art inspires our world, and we're focused on expanding that narrative: to our artists-in-residence, to LGBTQ+ high schoolers, to sensory-sensitive children, to fellow local arts nonprofits, and beyond.
As always, we're grateful for your collective support, which makes what we do possible. This year, in the spirit of the holiday season, join the #GivingTuesday movement by choosing to support everything that makes contemporary art so unique and indispensable.

An Art Talk with Dan Mills, Director of the Bates College Museum of Art
Mills' endeavor to map our world is one that not only satisfies his innate curiosity, but also yields visually engaging work that is surprisingly telling in its examination of our world.
As an artist, Mills is fascinated by cartography and other systems of visualizing and codifying information, history, and current events. In addition to his art talk, a
selection of works from Mills'
U.S. Future States Atlas
, a compilation of reconfigurations of the global future of U.S. imperialism, will be featured in the upcoming Main Gallery exhibition,
Ideologue.

THESE WERE A FEW OF OUR
FAVORITE THINGS
|
Out Loud is an artistic platform for youth voices in the LGBTQ+ community.
Last year, UMOCA hosted its first Out Loud workshop series, during which one student collected people's favorite childhood toys as part of a study on how our identities and our toys might "match up." For three months, these toys were congregated together along UMOCA's hallway, interacting with visitors as part of the
Out Loud
exhibition.
Through explorations in contemporary art, students in Out Loud build their capacities for self-expression, develop personal identity, foster a safe space, and cultivate a sense of agency. Applications for the workshop series, which is open to youth grades 9-12 and will run February through April, are now open.
DEADLINE TO APPLY: JAN 18

For those stylish friends and family members looking for their next favorite piece of jewelry, look no further. A simple but elegant wood bangle by Isaac Hastings ($10-$20) pairs perfectly with any of Kali Mellus' many resin and beaded pieces ($22-$50).
|
Finely Crafted,
Fully Functional
Each of Ernest Gentry's rustic bowls and spice jars ($25-36) or Joshua Flicker's industrial bowls and bottles ($22-350) would be the perfect gift to immediately add an earthy yet sleek and contemporary statement to a home.
|
Thoughtful Tokens
It's the perfect weather to curl up and peruse through one of JP Haynie and Davis Ngarupe's beautifully designed books ($15-24)--or, write your own thoughts in one of Alexis Mattox's intricately laser-cut journals ($45-50) and pair it with a card by Jodi Steen ($5).

ASSEMBLED ART & SOCIAL PRACTICE

|
STROLLER TOURS
Grandma's Cupboard
Much of Kate Ericson's and Mel Ziegler's works comprise a collection of individual objects: a collection of expressive rocks, for example, form America in Ziegler's
Rock Hard Individualism. This month, bring your young children, strollers in tow, for one of your last chances to explore this stunning and thoughtful Main Gallery exhibition.

FAMILY ART SATURDAY
Quilting Together
Taking after the social practice in
Grandma's Cupboard, this month's free art activity will teach visitors about traditional quilt designs. Then, families will create two unique fabric squares: one to take home, and one to donate to the creation of a community quilt, which will go to a worthy home in Salt Lake City.

We love seeing shots like @whitmor_'s, where visitors capture their interactions with the art. Share yours with

Thanks to @amyrachel for capturing just how tiny the isolated, camera-wielding tourists really are in the altered photographs of Stefan Lesueur's

This young museum visitor made sure we knew that she helped artist-in-residence Jean Richardson collect orange life vests for her show,
Every Now and Then I Fall Apart.
