This past week we have seen a wonderful news article emerge about the great work being done by one of our graduates, Dr. Ashraf Gorgey. Dr. Gorgey graduated from our Master of Science in Clinical and Translational Sciences program in summer 2015 and has recently been assisting a Marine who was left partially paralyzed after an accident he sustained while serving in Guam.
This remarkable young man is learning how to walk again with Dr. Gorgey's expert medical care and the use of an exoskeleton suite. Their story is a prime example of the power of translational research and advancements in science.

"When Mommy Gets Depressed: A Discovery Dialogue about Complementary Approaches for Perinatal Depression."
She shared her research on the subject and discussed the importance of treating depressive symptoms early with complementary health options such as yoga, guided imagery and a
cupuncture.

Dr. Ashraf Gorgey Assists Marine with Walking Again after Accident
A graduate of the VCU Master of Science in Clinical and Translational Sciences program, Dr. Ashraf Gorgey, MPT, Ph.D., FACSM, director of spinal cord injury research at Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center and faculty
for the VCU Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, has made news recently for assisting Marine Cpl. Josh Burch with attending his promotion ceremony last Friday without the use of a wheelchair.
An accident five months ago left Burch partially paralyzed, but he has worked hard during his recovery at the McGuire VA Medical Center. With Dr. Gorgey's assistance and the use of the facility's exoskeleton suit, Burch stood for his promotion to a non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Marine Corps.

CCTR participated in National Wear Red Day on Friday, Feb. 5 to raise awareness for heart disease and stroke in women.

The Central Virginia Society of Clinical Research Associates chapter meeting has been rescheduled for
Tuesday, Feb. 16
from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Critical Care Hospital, 1st floor, Room 304.
Meghan Wright, human subjects protection educator for the VCU Office of Research, will lead a presentation titled, "Informed Consent and Re-Consenting Research Subjects."
Note: 1.0 CEU will be offered for this presentation for SoCRA members. SoCRA members will also receive a certificate of attendance.

CCTR and Tompkins-McCaw Library are co- hosting the next seminar in the Whetting Your Appetite for Research series on Wednesday, Feb. 17 from noon - 1:00 p.m. in the Tompkins- McCaw Library, Room 109.
Margaret Henderson, director for research data management at Tompkins-McCaw Library, will discuss how to write a data management plan and store research data for compliance with new federal policies.
Drinks will be provided and participants are encouraged to bring their lunch.

Join NCATS for Rare Disease Day at NIH
On Monday, Feb. 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., NIH will host an event at their main campus in Bethesda, Md., designed to raise awareness about rare diseases, the people they affect and current research collaborations.
The event will feature presentations, posters, exhibits, tours of the NIH Clinical Center and an art show. Click here to register.
Prior to the event, NIH will host a Twitter chat on Monday, Feb. 22 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. to discuss rare diseases with Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., NIH director, and Christopher P. Austin, M.D., NCATS director.
