The Sterling Family donated $100 to the school in memory of Gary Sitton, Grandfather to CCDS students Josh Andersen.
Thank you to the Sterling family and the Sitton/Bailey/Anderson family for supporting CCDS!

A big "THANK YOU" for all of the donations we received to pack our Christmas Boxes! Our students really enjoyed putting them all together to be sent given to kids in Mexico for Christmas. The boxes created with your donated items brought a lot of happiness to these kiddos.

Ruth Greenfield, Jim McKenzie and all the CCDS music students in band and choir gave a magnificant performance at the Winter Concert.  Thank you for making music at CCDS!

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear Parents and Guardians,

One of the special things at Chico Country Day is our sense of community. Students learn the importance of their valuable place in our Chico community, our neighborhood community and our school community. You, as parents, are an integral part of the fine machine we call CCDS. We work hard to ensure students are safe, welcomed, and connected with their CCDS family of staff and students.

With a sad heart, I must point out that the safety of our students at morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up has become a concern. As you drive your child to school, try a few of these tips to ensure all student arrive safely. Leave five to ten minutes earlier.  You would be surprised how few cars on the road at 7:55 a.m.
  • Try a different route than turning off Park Avenue onto 11th Street. The alternative approaches to CCDS can be less congested.
  • As you are maneuvering through the drop-off and pick-up zones, use patience and common sense. Always move forward in the loading zone to show respect to those around you.
  • Never drop off or pick up your child in traffic. This is why we have loading zones. We value your child safely arriving on time and are doing our utmost to keep traffic flowing and pedestrians safe.
Now onto something that lifts my heart, meaningful work that is happening in our school.  An interesting project caught my eye in Middle School that I would like to highlight this month.  Mrs. Maiorano's 8th graders are taking part in a Resilience Project. Learners will be researching historical figures and literary characters in order to find how they showed resilience, why they had to show resilience and how it applies today. In addition, students will interview our neighbors at 1200 Park to learn their stories about life and resilience. Learning goals for the students range from how we show empathy, to writing and revising for authentic audiences, to exploring American history from the lense of resilience. On Exhibition Night, these students will be performing spoken word poetry at "Resilience Cafe," We look forward to guiding the 8th graders in their learning.

Staffappreciationweek
Staff Appreciation Week

Staff appreciation week is coming up the week before Valentine's Day, February 8-11.  We have lots of love planned again this year!  As always we encourage you and your students to take the time to write a card or note to your favorite staff members, deliver it yourself or leave in the office and we will deliver them for you. We will have an appreciation station set up  on Tuesday  where kids can make a card at lunch time. There will be vases in each classroom/office and we encourage you to bring a flower from home any day during the week to add to your teacher's bouquet.

All week long we will have collection bins in both offices for "Stock the Staff Room". Snacks, Coffee, tea, soda, candy, chips, granola bars.  Whatever (non perishable) items you would love to share with the staff would be great!  We have a sign up genius below and would love your help.  You can contact Lesley Christopher  for any questions.  The link will also be on the CCDS PTP facebook.  If you are not yet a member, please join! We post all of our current and upcoming events!

ART at CCDS:  AMAZING!

There is currently a plethora of amazing art projects being created at CCDS.  First  grade is studying arctic animals and made penguin collages.   Second grade created biome art with chalk, glue and black paper.   Third grade is currently working on submissions for the Jr. Duck Stamp contest which is a perfect project while  studying animal adaptations.
Check out the 4th grade self portraits and 5th grade basket weaving in the above photos.

Don't forget to visit the Art Show at the Chico Mall, February   2- 21.  The art to be displayed will be from the following classes: Mrs. Mathews, Mrs. Stedman, Mrs. Daverson, Mrs. Spy, Mr. Pembroke, and Mrs. Miller.

LIFE SKILL OF THE MONTH:
Patience

WHAT IS PATIENCE?
To calmly wait for someone or something.

WHAT DOES PATIENCE LOOK LIKE?
  • Wait politely until others have stopped talking before you speak.
  • Wait your turn in a game.
  • Stand in line at the store, zoo, movies, amusement park.
  • Wait to use a toy or material someone else is using.
  • Sit in a waiting room at the doctor or dentist office.
PATIENCE IS NOT EASY.

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE CLASSROOM?

8th Grade English Class Studies Resilience

Last week 8th Grade English kicked off their Resilience Project with a breakout box. This entry event required the students to work together, problem solve, and persevere in order to obtain clues that would let them unlock the box.  Think of it as a 45-minute intense scavenger hunt.  This project will require the students to explore resilience - they will be doing research, reading and discussing literature, creating artwork, conducting interviews of local community members, and writing poems.  We will be hosting a Resilience Cafe - a poetry reading later this spring as our culminating event.

Seventh Grade Helps Critique 3rd Grade Project
The 3rd graders are in the process of writing their animal reports for their project Survival of the Fittest.  They have researched, taken notes, and started to write several paragraphs about their animal.

Our 7th grade project peers came in to do some Warm and Cool Critiques.  Seventh graders became an experts on one part of the writing process   The reason for peer critiques is to improve whatever you're working on.  Overall, the kids felt really good about having 1:1 attention and having the 7th graders praise them. Thank you 7th graders for helping the 3rd grade fine-tune their animal reports.

Parent Volunteers Lend a Hand in 6th Grade

Mrs. Bower's class welcomed many parent volunteers into their class for a special Speed Feedback Session to help students make their work better. It was a great opportunity for positive feedback. Thank you to the parents who participated!
