In Dr. Gibson's Biotech Engineering class, students have been discovering how to extract oil from algae and how to process oil into biodiesel fuel. This 4-week PBL just concluded, and one of the products of student learning was the creation of actual biodiesel (photo included)! Students were very excited to put their knowledge to use and participate in this event. The fun is only just beginning, as the next step will be to test our fuel in a miniature car, which can run on diesel or ethanol. We will keep you posted!
BSEE Technology Competition

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement is hosting the first BSEE Technology Competition!  Thirty two Energy students were selected to participate in this event, competing against the other IPAA academies.  Teams prepped today with a training session hosted by the Ocean Energy Safety Institute.  Students will be preparing over the next couple of weeks for their competition dealing with circuits and helicopters.  We are excited for competition day!
PTO Booster Meeting
PTO and Parent Advisory Council will meet this Thursday, February 11th at 5:15pm.  Please join us in the cafeteria for this important meeting. Stay connected and speak up on what's important to you....your input is valuable!  We would love to see all current members and anyone who is interested in joining come out this Thursday!
Guest Speaker Dress Code
Thursday, February 11th, ninth grade students will have a guest speaker event and will need to be in an Energy polo.  Students will now be given detention if they are not wearing a school polo at these required events. The school required polo is not the black IPAA polo students received in the past.  Please see the PTO Boosters section for ordering information. If you believe your child received detention by mistake (either they purchased a polo or were wearing it at the event) please ask them to speak with Ms. Moon.
Teacher Leaders at Energy

This past weekend, Ms. Alexander,  Ms. DeLaRosa, and Dr. Hall
represented Energy by presenting at the district wide Transformation Summit and the Region IV 8th Annual Science Conference.  The conferences highlighted schools and programs that are helping to transform our traditional modeI of education. Ms. Alexander, Ms. DeLaRosa, and Dr. Hall all faciliated workshops for teachers and leaders.

Ms. Alexander presented to the group of teachers and administrators about PBL and the specific process used at Energy. She shared different past and current projects from Chemistry, Algebra, Biology, English I & II, Engineering, and geography. Teachers had a brainstorming session in which they followed a project ideation form to come up with a possible project within their content.  The excitement around PBL and the real examples from Ms. Alexander's class led to a great Q&A session.

Ms. De La Rosa, as a member of Houston ISD's Professional Learning Opportunity Team, creates training modules for New Teacher Saturdays. Together with her partner, Mrs. Barbee from East Early College, she shared her module "Managing Technology in the 21st Century Classroom" and co-presented Mrs. Barbee's Module, "Checks for Student Understanding and Responds to Student Misunderstanding" to almost 30 new teachers and associate teachers.  In her sessions, new teachers were excited to learn strategies on how to incorporate technology as a tool, the 21st century book, paper and pencil, and in her other session, they find innovative ways to check for understanding within the classroom setting.

Dr. Valencia Hall presented her session "Help Please! Strategies for Creating an Interactive Classroom" with her sister Ms. Amanda Dutton at the Region IV 8th Annual Science Conference.   The session was about helping educators with classroom management, interactive lesson planning, and student ownership of work. They were able to inform educators on how to utilize some of the latest websites and apps that are commonly used in a 1-to-1 classroom which can also be used in a traditional classroom setting. Their focus for the workshop was to also provide a way to aid special education, at-risk, and ELL students in the classroom. Some of the apps taught were ClassDojo, Plickers, CamScanner, and EduCreations.

Thanks to teachers like Ms. Alexander, Ms. DeLaRosa, and Dr. Hall, Energy Institute High School is leading the district in PBL and transformative teaching.  We are very proud of these teacher leaders for representing Energy and for all the work they do in and out of the classroom!
STAAR Tutorials
English STAAR tutorials start this Saturday.  Tutorials will begin promptly at 8:30am and finish at 11:30am for our ninth and tenth grade students.  A more detailed STAAR and AP Saturday tutorial schedule will be shared soon!
From Nurse Jones

To ninth grade parents and teachers, per state mandate, all ninth grade students will be getting screened for scoliosis starting next week. The majority will be completed during P.E. if the students are currently enrolled in class with Ms. Watts. The others will be called out and briefly excused for screening then return back to class. The cause of scoliosis is unknown, however, early detection and intervention can prevent and slow physical limitation and possible complications.
Thank you for your cooperation!
