The
conference schedule is a hot one this year. Our Jacques Jenny Lecturer is the esteemed
Dr. Douglas Beaman from Portland, Oregon. We have an equine specific track that brings together a group of speakers that will tell you about the latest in orthopedics. There are small panel discussions on pain management and radiology rounds. And who wouldn't want to go to a talk called "Complications, Corrections and Acts of Desperation."
As for the other fun stuff, the ski race, comedy night, poster session and silent auction are all still on the menu. Let the kids have a night to themselves at the Kids Pizza Party Wednesday, March 2nd during Foundation Night. Please see the

 Our 2016 Jacques Jenny Lecturer is
Douglas Beaman, MD, of Portland, Oregon. Dr. Beaman began his orthopaedic practice in Portland in 1995 at Emanuel Hospital, and specializes in lower extremity trauma and reconstructive surgery. He has authored multiple book chapters, presented research at national meetings, and published research in peer-reviewed orthopaedic journals.

The 2016 VOS Conference will feature a 2-day specific equine track, with invited speakers. Equine and general topics also will be covered in other sessions at the meeting, such as Sports Medicine, Regenerative Medicine, and Complications and Corrections, as well as the session for Residents.
The equine sessions will have scientific abstracts and then talks from our invited experts, with plenty of time for discussion and additional experts such as Professor Roger Smith, Professor Carl Kirker-Head, and Dr. Matt Stewart in attendance. The VOS tradition of great academic discussions on chairlifts also will be upheld!

Our speakers include:
 David Frisbie, DVM, PhD, MS, DACVS, DACVSMR
Dr. Frisbie studied at the University of Wisconsin, and completed a surgical residency at Cornell University. While completing his surgical residency, he also earned a master's degree in Joint Pathology at Colorado State University. During work on his PhD, Dr. Frisbie became board certified in large animal surgery as a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He is also a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation and currently serves as the College's Secretary.
Dr. Frisbie is a partner in Equine Sports Medicine, LLC, specializing in orthopaedics and sports medicine. In addition he is an Associate Professor of Equine Surgery at
Colorado State University's Equine Orthopaedic Research Center. A keen bumps skier and mountain biker, David has a critical yet pragmatic approach to the application of novel scientific innovations in equine orthopaedics.
 Dean Richardson, AB, DVM, DACVS
Dr. Richardson is one of the world's foremost experts in equine orthopedic surgery. He received his DVM from The Ohio State University in 1979, completed a rotating internship and residency in large animal medicine and surgery at Penn Vet, and received postgraduate training in the Division of Rheumatology at Thomas Jefferson University.
Dr Richardson is the Charles W. Raker Professor of Equine Surgery and Chief of Large Animal Surgery at Penn Vet's New Bolton Centre. Surgery is his clinical specialty, and his research areas are large animal surgery, equine emergency surgery, and equine lower limb injury. A rider himself, he is widely regarded as a "surgeon's surgeon."
 Sarah Puchalski, BSc, DVM, DACVR
Dr. Puchalski has developed an international reputation as an expert in equine diagnostic imaging and now bases her practice at Circle Oak Equine. She received her DVM from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan in 1999 and completed her diagnostic imaging residency at the University of California, Davis.
As an assistant, and later associate, professor at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine (2005-2013), Dr. Puchalski focused on didactic and clinical teaching, research and clinical radiology. Her research interests surround the use of novel imaging techniques for the diagnosis of lameness conditions in equine athletes. Dr. Puchalski opened her consulting practice in 2013 and consults remotely for numerous practices across Europe, Australia, the US and Canada. She regularly participates in showjumping and has a very practical approach to the application of diagnostic imaging.
Susan Stover, BS, DVM, PhD
Dr. Stover received her DVM from
Washington State University and completed an equine surgery residency and a PhD in comparative pathology at UC Davis. She is the Director of the JD Wheat Veterinary Orthopedic Research Laboratory at UC Davis where her specialty focus includes musculoskeletal biomechanics; etiopathogenesis of repetitive, overuse injuries; equine locomotor anatomy; and racehorse musculoskeletal fatalities.
Dr. Stover has an internationally recognized program in equine racing injuries, and her research has helped inform policy changes improving the welfare of racing horses. She was the 2007 recipient of the Faculty Research Award at UC-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. In 2008 she was selected as an Outstanding Woman in Racing by the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association.

 VOS has released an updated
2016 Conference program with complete details about each day's schedule, presentation topics, and speakers.
We have an expanded, parallel equine program this year with two full days of speakers and abstracts geared towards equine orthopaedics surgery, imaging and regenerative medicine that will run parallel to the small animal lectures. Invited speakers include the "surgeons's surgeon" Professor Dean Richardson, orthopedic guru Professor David Frisbie, imaging expert Dr. Sarah Puchalski and Professor Sue Stover who has contributed so much to our understanding of the etiopathogenesis of musculoskeletal injuries. We will be running sessions on these areas, with keynote presentations and scientific abstracts, so there will be plenty of time for small group discussion with key opinion leaders.

Core concepts, indications and practical tips/hands-on lab for Veterinary Orthotics & Prosthetics (V-OP)
Course Description: The goal of this laboratory is to provide the participant with an overview on how to successfully implement veterinary orthotic and prosthetic solutions into your clinic. The didactic portion of the lab will provide the participant with basic concepts of three point corrective
force application used to create stabilization and allows minimizing wound complications associated with external coaptation/V-OP. We will describe indications for the use of V-OP as an adjunct method after surgical treatment and/or as a solution for patients unable to undergo surgery. The wet lab portion will utilize limb
models and cover the practical/hands-on experience of the phases involved when treating a patient with V-OP. This includes the creation of an imprint that is needed for manufacturing of the device, fitting the patient and analyzing the supportive mechanics of the device. A series of possible complications (donning, doffing, skin sores) and how to address them by in-house modification of the device will be covered. This lab is designed as an introductory session for individuals that are considering incorporating V-OP into their practice or simply want to learn more about the mechanics of coaptation and this novel field.

VETERINARY ORTHOPEDIC IMPLANTS

Course Description: CORA based leveling osteotomy is a procedure where the tibial plateau slope is modified by centering the saw blade (ACA) at the location of the CORA (center of rotation of angulation). In doing so there is no secondary translation, ie, the proximal anatomic axis and distal anatomic axis are aligned. The TPA/PTA angle lies between 88 degrees and 90 degrees. The osteotomy is stabilized with a
Veterinary Orthopedic Implant (VOI) specially designed locking plate and counter-sink compression screw. Additional advantages of the CBLO include: ease of surgical planning and technique, excellent long term functional results, normal long term appearance of articular cartilage, rapid healing of the osteotomy (6-7 weeks), ability to apply osteotomy in juvenile patients, and application in cases with excessive slope. The course will detail surgical planning, application in simulated bone, management of complications, and long term outcome.
 Lead Instructor:
Don Hulse, DVM, DACVS, DECVS
Dr. Don Hulse graduated from Texas A&M University in 1970 and completed his surgical training at Kansas State University in 1973. Starting in 1970 and continuing until his appointment as a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Texas A&M University in 1984, Dr. Hulse served as a clinician in general practice and as Staff Surgeon at Louisiana State University and Oklahoma State University. He successfully fulfilled the requirements for admission into the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1977. He has developed techniques commonly used for treatment of bone and joint disorders in dogs and is well published in the veterinary literature. His clinical research interests focus on minimally invasive surgery for joint disorders and for fracture treatment.

Stifle Arthroscopy and Static Stabilization Course for the Advanced Surgeon
Course Description:
Arthrex Vet Systems is proud to sponsor the Stifle Arthroscopy and Static Stabilization Course for the Advanced Surgeon on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 as part of the Annual VOS Symposium. This course is designed for the advanced surgeon or 3rd/4th year Residents wanting to develop their arthroscopy skills for the canine stifle. In the morning session, lectures and wet lab will cover limb positioning, portal placement, equipment, and diagnosis and treatment of common issues related to the stifle. In the afternoon session, lectures and wet lab will cover static stabilization options for CCL injuries. Course fee is $500 and will include course materials, and bone models.  Ian Holsworth, BVSc MANZCVS (Surgery), Diplomate ACVS
Dr. Ian Holsworth graduated in 1991 from the University of Melbourne and spent 8 years in general practice in a combination of farm animal, equine racing and pleasure horse practice and small animal general and surgical practice. Dr. Holsworth became an examined Member of the Surgery College of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in 1995. Following a position as Staff Surgeon for an eight-practice small animal veterinary group in Melbourne, Dr. Holsworth relocated to Michigan as a Surgery fellow in the Michigan State Veterinary Teaching Hospital. At the conclusion of the fellowship, Dr. Holsworth commenced a three-year position as a small animal surgical resident at the University of California, Davis Veterinary Teaching Hospital, which he completed in July 2003. Dr. Holsworth has presented many surgical scientific papers at national meetings in both Australia and the US. Topics covered include shoulder, hip, elbow, and knee disease in dogs with particular focus on advanced imaging and arthroscopic assessment of juvenile orthopedic disease. Dr. Holsworth is currently owner and surgeon at VetSurg in Ventura, California.
 Kurt S. Schulz, DVM, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons
Dr. Kurt Schulz served for nine years as an Associate Professor of small animal surgery at the University of California, Davis, California. He was Chief of Surgery at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital for four years and the head of small animal orthopedic research. He is a graduate of Cornell University and completed his residency at Virginia Tech. Dr. Schulz is a co-author of Small Animal Surgery, Small Animal Arthroscopy, and The Pet Lovers Guide to Joint Disease and Osteoarthritis and has published 65 peer-reviewed scientific articles. He has also served on the veterinary faculty of Texas A&M University and was a veterinarian in the United States Peace Corps serving in the mountains and desert of Morocco. Dr. Schulz has served on the examination committee for the ACVS and is an international speaker on small animal surgery. He leads an international program focused on Outcomes Measures and Evidence Based Medicine in small animal orthopedics. He lives in Burlington, Vermont with his wife and two young boys.

Demonstration of Image Guided Robotic Surgery: The Future Using High Resolution 3-Dimensional Imaging in the Veterinary Profession Has Arrived!
Course Description: Be among the first to see and learn about image guided surgical navigation and how it will impact the future of veterinary orthopedics.
 Instructor: William D. Liska, DVM, Dipl. ACVS
Dr. Liska received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Iowa State University in 1973. He completed an internship and surgical residency at The Animal Medical Center in New York in 1976. He became Board Certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1980. He started in practice in Houston from 1976 until 1988. In 1988, he founded one of the largest private multi-disciplinary veterinary specialty hospitals accepting patients by referral only from other veterinarians. He sold his interest in that practice in 2013 and founded Global Veterinary Specialists and Global Veterinary Innovations in January 2014. His practice is limited to orthopedics with primary focus on total hip replacement surgery and other arthroplasty procedures.

Activities at Big Sky
There is as much to do off the mountain as there is on the mountain for kids and kid-like adults alike.
Ski.com will have a representative at the Saturday night Welcome Party to sign people up for these activities. Big Sky also has a center called "Basecamp" right in the village, and its staff can sign people up for any of the activities any time during their stay.

Applicants should have a DVM or equivalent degree and be board certified or have recently completed a residency in surgery. We are referral center, primary care facility and teaching hospital with 24-hour emergency service. We have a staff of 49 veterinarians with specialists in 9 specialties.
