In the January issue of Spots Illustrated, I mentioned an upcoming pet photography workshop I'll be attending. There are 3 amazing pet photographers facilitating the workshop and I'll feature each of them in my next 3 issues.

All of the images in this issue are from Kaylee Greer of Dog Breath Photography.  If you want to see her amazing work, click the link above.  **If you do not see an image of a chocolate lab above, PLEASE right click to download the images.  You really must see these!**

I remember seeing her work for the first time and just being blown away.  On her site it says that she finds her inspiration from the soul of a dog and that she is fueled by the joy, whimsy and unrelenting happiness that is so uniquely canine. I love her use of vibrant colors and the way she captures each dog having fun.

Kaylee also spends time volunteering to take photos at her local animal shelter to use on their adoption pages.  That is one lucky shelter!

I can't wait to meet her because I am fairly certain she is pretty fun herself.  Every correspondence I've had with her includes words like GAHHHH!!! and AAHHHH!!!! and lots of these: !!!!!

I believe Kaylee could've used my man Moose as the model for this shot.  I've not seen Moose in a snowstorm but I imagine he would soar after snowflakes just like this dog if given the chance.  I am so excited to work with Kaylee and learn from her.

BARKELONA - A PET PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

In April, I am going to experience perhaps one of the highlights of my life.  I am going to attend a pet photography workshop in Spain.

In pursuing this new found passion I have for photography, I found an online group of pet photographers that have been a wealth of information.  Little did I know, but three of the most seasoned pet photographers in this group and some of my favorites were joining forces to offer this once in a life time event.

As soon as the applications were available, I applied and then had to wait until I heard if I'd been accepted or not.  I was!  Leaving my dogs, Don and my See Spot Run family for this trip is going to be hard but I know it will be worth it.  I don't want to wish time away but I cannot wait until April!

PS  I love this image by Kaylee!  If you visit her page, you'll be greeted by this face.
MERIDIAN MOBILE VETERINARY SERVICE

I am so thrilled to announce that there is a new type of veterinary service available in the Charlotte area.  Dr. Barbara Butchko is a wonderful, compassionate veterinarian and someone I feel so fortunate to also call her my friend.  She has launched Meridian Mobile Veterinary Care and I asked her to talk about the services she offers.

To learn more about her, the services she offers, her rates, and read the reviews from some of her current clients, please follow this link to her website:   Meridian Mobile Veterinary Care.  If you're on facebook,  here is a link to her facebook page too.

This is my own testimonial: Our black lab Buddy didn't enjoy his trips to the vet so when he started to develop arthritis in his hips, we had Dr. Butchko come to our house to give him acupuncture treatments.  He got so much more benefit from the treatments since he was relaxed, on his own bed, and in his own house for the treatments.  The difference in his mobility after the treatments was apparent.  I also got an unforeseen benefit from these sessions.  Seeing Buddy so relaxed was less stressful for me than taking him to the vet.

Here is a note from Dr. Butchko:

I'm Dr. Barbara Butchko, owner of Meridian Mobile Veterinary Care - In Home Acupuncture, Hospice, and Euthanasia. Kim Hollis asked me to write a few words to introduce myself and my business to you all.

I have been practicing veterinary medicine in small animal clinics for 15 years. Over those 15 years, I have learned the value of an integrated approach to veterinary medicine. I obtained certification in veterinary acupuncture in 2013, and I have been amazed by how well it compliments modern western medicine. Using acupuncture, I have been able to help dogs with injured backs avoid surgery and pets with inflammatory conditions reduce their steroid doses. I have also used acupuncture extensively in older pets to help keep them comfortable and mobile. Acupuncture is not a miracle cure, and it is best used in combination with more conventional treatments, but it can be an invaluable component in a comprehensive treatment plan.

The other thing that I have learned is that, as pets near the end of life, one of the kindest things that we can do for them is to manage their veterinary care at home. As wonderful as most veterinarians and their staffs are, the clinic setting is inherently stressful - with all of the noise, smells, and other pets to contend with. With hospice care, we come to the pet's environment. We focus on pain management, the logistics of caregiving, and on monitoring quality of life. And, when the time comes, we can perform a peaceful euthanasia. For me, euthanasia is the most important thing that I do. Helping pets transition in a familiar environment and in a way that respects their owners' wishes and belief systems is vital, and it is an honor.

If you are wondering if acupuncture might be a good option for your pet, or if you are considering in-home hospice care, please visit our website at meridianmobilevet.com or give us a call at 704-779-9000. We would love to help you and your beloved pet in any way that we can!

I hope you enjoyed this issue of SI.  I always love to hear your feedback so feel free to email me if you have any comments, suggestions for topics in future issues, or questions you'd like me to address.

Spring Break will be here before we know it so if you have any upcoming trips planned and you'll need pet sitting, please let me know so I can reserve your spots on my calendar. Happy February!

Sincerely,

Kim Hollis
