I am so thrilled to announce that there is a new type of veterinary service available in the Charlotte area. Dr. Barbara Butchko is a wonderful, compassionate veterinarian and someone I feel so fortunate to also call her my friend. She has launched Meridian Mobile Veterinary Care and I asked her to talk about the services she offers.
This is my own testimonial: Our black lab Buddy didn't enjoy his trips to the vet so when he started to develop arthritis in his hips, we had Dr. Butchko come to our house to give him acupuncture treatments. He got so much more benefit from the treatments since he was relaxed, on his own bed, and in his own house for the treatments. The difference in his mobility after the treatments was apparent. I also got an unforeseen benefit from these sessions. Seeing Buddy so relaxed was less stressful for me than taking him to the vet.
Here is a note from Dr. Butchko:
I'm Dr. Barbara Butchko, owner of Meridian Mobile Veterinary Care - In Home Acupuncture, Hospice, and Euthanasia. Kim Hollis asked me to write a few words to introduce myself and my business to you all.
I have been practicing veterinary medicine in small animal clinics for 15 years. Over those 15 years, I have learned the value of an integrated approach to veterinary medicine. I obtained certification in veterinary acupuncture in 2013, and I have been amazed by how well it compliments modern western medicine. Using acupuncture, I have been able to help dogs with injured backs avoid surgery and pets with inflammatory conditions reduce their steroid doses. I have also used acupuncture extensively in older pets to help keep them comfortable and mobile. Acupuncture is not a miracle cure, and it is best used in combination with more conventional treatments, but it can be an invaluable component in a comprehensive treatment plan.
The other thing that I have learned is that, as pets near the end of life, one of the kindest things that we can do for them is to manage their veterinary care at home. As wonderful as most veterinarians and their staffs are, the clinic setting is inherently stressful - with all of the noise, smells, and other pets to contend with. With hospice care, we come to the pet's environment. We focus on pain management, the logistics of caregiving, and on monitoring quality of life. And, when the time comes, we can perform a peaceful euthanasia. For me, euthanasia is the most important thing that I do. Helping pets transition in a familiar environment and in a way that respects their owners' wishes and belief systems is vital, and it is an honor.
