 Defending the Sanctity of Life:
Sanctity of Human Life Sunday
Coming to a Church Near You!
Sanctity of Human Life Sunday on Jan. 17
Mike Johnson

By State Rep. Mike Johnson
LARTL Regional Director
for North Louisiana

Each January, "Sanctity of Human Life Month" is observed in churches throughout our country to remind Americans of the inestimable value of every innocent human life.

On Jan. 22, America will mark the tragic 43rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court's disastrous decision to legalize abortion on demand in all 50 states. Since that time, approximately 59 million unborn children have been lost to abortion, mostly because someone considered them too inconvenient or expensive. That staggering number represents somewhere between one-half to one-third of my entire generation, and the cultural consequences of this loss are incalculable.

Because many Americans - including people of faith - are still unaware of the scope of this tragedy and what can be done to address it, a growing number of churches across the nation have begun to recognize the third Sunday in January each year as the "Sanctity of Human Life Day." This tradition, which grew out of the annual proclamations of President Ronald Reagan beginning in 1984, is an opportunity to share what Scripture teaches about the inherent dignity and value of every single human life, and what responsibility we have to act in love to defend it.

As more people of faith understand this issue and help raise awareness, reach out a renewed hand of compassion, and stand unapologetically for this biblical principle, we know it can make a difference. Polls show that a growing majority of Americans now identify themselves as "pro-life," but we have a long way yet to go before human life in all of its expressions - preborn, newborn, elderly, disabled - is fully embraced and legally protected.

In light of recent media attention given to the atrocities of Planned Parenthood, there has never been a better time to explain the facts about the abortion industry - and our pro-life cause. Pastors are in a unique position, and, I believe, have a particular responsibility, to inform their congregations and influence the culture about these issues. This January will be the perfect time to do so, and a wealth of excellent materials is now available to assist in this effort.

In Moses' last days he reminded the people of God's eternal faithfulness and the promise of restoration. "This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses," he said. "Now choose life, so that you and your children may live." (Deut. 30:19) That same profound admonition echoes down through the generations to us today.

The time is urgent, and the people need to hear it. Let's do our part to share the message.

We encourage your church to participate in Sanctity of Human Life Sunday. We have provided online resources at prolifelouisiana.org/sunday to make your observance of SOHLS even more special. You can order free Sanctity of Human Life Sunday cards to distribute and download our Sanctity of Human Life Pastor's Handbook, which includes information to help pastors discuss the Sanctity of Human Life more effectively with their congregations. Please take advantage of these materials.  Traditionally, Southern Baptist churches observe Sanctity of Human Life Sunday, but our materials are open to all Christian churches.

Pro-Life Banners Line Portion
of Historic St. Charles Boulevard
16 Streetlights Adorned with Pro-Life Signs

By Shanon Snyder

Projects Director, New Orleans Right to Life

New Orleans and Louisiana Right to Life have partnered together to have 16 streetlight banner signs installed along historic St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans between St. Joseph Street and State Street. The signs went up Thursday, Dec. 10, and will remain up at least through January. The two-sided pink banners, intended to raise awareness regarding the humanity of the unborn, display a 19-week-old baby in utero and state: "Give Her Life a Chance! First Heartbeat 22 Days after Conception!"

Under Louisiana state law babies may be aborted up to 20 weeks fetal age for any reason. We hope the banners help educate the public by highlighting the humanity of the unborn so often overlooked in our society.

Robert Winn, president of New Orleans Right to Life, commissioned the signs after hearing about similar signs put up by Students for Life at the University of Southern California.

There, college administrators removed streetlight banners with a pro-life message, saying they conflicted with school policy. USC agreed to reimburse the student group, but the signs were taken down. Winn saw this as an effective way to bring the pro-life debate to the minds of New Orleans residents.

The signs were put up at a contentious time in the pro-life debate in New Orleans. Planned Parenthood is building a new facility on South Claiborne Avenue, where the organization intends to perform 2,844 abortions every year. However, Planned Parenthood has met resistance from the local pro-life community. Archbishop Gregory Aymond of the Archdiocese of New Orleans discouraged businesses from working with Planned Parenthood, stating blatantly, "We cannot cooperate with evil." The efforts of local pro-life action groups and churches delayed the facility's slated opening by nearly two years. We hope the installation of the streetlight signs in the heart of Uptown New Orleans will reignite the local debates of the controversial clinic.

The pro-life cause in New Orleans shows no sign of slowing down. We hope the new streetlights signs will push the discussion of pro-life issues in New Orleans to the forefront and remind those who may still support abortion that it is the killing of a unique, precious and valuable human being.
