Katallasso Provider Spotlight

Dr. Ed Foster

is a graduate of Wheaton College and the University of Maryland School of Medicine and then gained his certification in internal medicine through a residency at York Hospital.  He then served as a medical officer in the Navy for several years before returning to York in 1992 to enter private practice.
A profound statement from Ed, "Katallasso gives physicians the opportunity to live out Jesus' instruction to love our neighbors, to meet them in their own neighborhood, to give with no expectation of gain."

Thank you so much Ed for your  dedication  and witness to the patients you serve at Katallasso!

Karen Hamilton, LPN

has been a very dedicated volunteer at Katallasso since the clinic opened.  She worked as an LPN for 45 years at York Hospital in Pediatrics and retired in 2012. Karen is married and has one son and three grandchildren. In addition to volunteering at Katallasso she also conducts children's tours of Colonial Downtown York and is very active in her church. Karen is always willing to go beyond the call of duty to carry out the mission of the center.

Thank you Karen for the  impact  you make as you care for the patients at Katallasso!

Strategic Planning/New
Positions

business-meeting-convo.jpg

In mid 2014 the Board of Directors realized the need to focus on a strategic plan for the center and Katallasso, Inc.   In April Katallasso met with Tweed-Weber for a Saturday retreat to start the strategic planning process and have been engaged since.   The Board wisely recognized at that time it would be important to solidify the Health Center over those next six months before moving on to another ministry. As a step in faith, the following positions have been approved to create a solid structure for the volunteers to work under:

Operations Manager

Nurse Manager

The center is currently in the process of interviewing and hiring for these two positions.

Who knows what comes next for Katallasso, Inc.  What ministry do we expand into?  We have about 8 areas that we believe the Church should have a stronger presence in.  Please pray for God's vision for the ministry and that it will be made obvious to the Board of Directors.

Katallasso Annual Health Festival

The Annual Katallasso Health Festival is scheduled for Saturday, August 29 from 12-3.  Last year was a great success with 17 health related stations and over 150 residents participating. This is  an excellent community day in the neighborhood where people can be screened for many health issues and get in touch with their own personal health needs through education.

Be sure to stop by to see what great impact is happening through Katallasso!
Getting to Know Our Clients

As part of the Culture of Excellence effort to take Katallasso to the next level we developed Businesswoman Interviewing Male Candidate For Job our new intake process for the patient's first visit.  We have been gathering pertinent data so we can know our client base better which helps in decision making concerning client services and possible expansion of ministry. Here is some interesting statistical data that has been compiled about our clients (you may find some surprises):

Survey Statistics

57% are city residents

46% are high school graduates

32% have some college/tech school

60% are currently employed

94% do not have insurance

Health Assessment Release

A Community Health Needs Assessment(CHNA) is conducted every three years by the Healthy York County Coalition in partnership with Healthy Adams County and Franklin and Marshall College.  Highlights of the 2015 CHNA were shared at the Health Summit on June 11, 2015.  Katallasso was mentioned at the summit as an organization filling in gaps of care in York County. Pictured above are Brian Kreeger, Katallasso and Deb Cogniat, Director of the Healthy York County Coalition attending this year's Health Summit.  Some quick facts from the assessment:

- There was an increase in those insured by 1% between 2011 and 2014.
-When asked if they did not receive health care in the past year because of cost the number actually increased from 12% in 2011 to 13% in 2015.
-Only 69% of those surveyed have dental insurance.
-High cholesterol and high blo0d pressure actually went up significantly from 2011.

The assessment is a public document available as a resource to other organizations working in the area of health and wellness.  View the entire report and summary results from the survey by clicking on the link below:

 Dedicated Employee Retires

Shirley Rabenstein, Clinical Coordinator, has decided to retire from Katallasso and although we are very happy for her, it is truly bittersweet for the center. Shirley was our first employee at Katallasso and was instrumental in making the center what

Shirley2
it is today with her dedication to God's work and the relationship she established with our staff of volunteers and our clients.  She has had a long stellar career in the nursing field and she is to be congratulated for impacting so many lives. Founder Brian Kreeger has said "Shirley was definitely a gift from God for Katallasso and filled a tremendous need at the center.  God's timing was perfect in bringing Shirley to us when He did.  Without Shirley who knows where we would be today."  It is definitely a loss for the clinic, but we wish her well as she enjoys time for herself, her husband and family.

Impact of the Quarter

(from the desk of medical director Duane Furman)

We have been serving a woman who is 27 years old, married for 8 years, who lives life with a joyful outlook with a devotion to her family that is beyond compare. She wears a continual smile on her face that lifts anyone in her presence. She speaks softly and maintains such a gentle spirit. Her heart is full of gratitude for she feels blessed; she feels at peace with herself.

What the above description does not capture is the physical toll her life has dealt her. She was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 5 and is now nearly blind with extremely limited vision but for shades and limited shapes. At the age of 21 she developed  end stage renal disease and is now on dialysis three times per week. At the age of 22 she required a right below the knee amputation due to complications from her diabetes and infections. Presently, she takes 16 different medications every day to help her "keep going" as she would say. Despite all her health issues, that smile and gentle appreciative spirit shines through.

She and her husband came to Katallasso two weeks ago after a friend read about Katallasso and mentioned the clinic to them. Her husband lost his insurance coverage and she was no longer able to afford her regular primary care physician. They have applied for various insurance programs but were either denied because he made too much income or they couldn't afford the coverage quoted for the care that she required. Uncertain as where to turn, they decided to take their friends advice and schedule an evaluation at the clinic as they work through the process of obtaining insurance.

During her time at Katallasso, she was able to get medications refilled at a reasonable cost and receive some samples to fill some of the medication gaps. She was set up for a GYN evaluation as her last one had been nearly two years ago and she was presently experiencing some abnormal bleeding. An appointment was scheduled with our Endocrinology provider so she could receive high quality care for her diabetic issues and concerns. Laboratory services were provided at no cost to her so that all the important blood tests could be completed. But most importantly, she felt loved, cared for and valued that she could receive this type of care in her time of need and uncertainty. As she left her appointment that day, she said,
" I may not be able to see with my eyes what Katallasso looks like, but I can sure feel in my heart what Katallasso is about."

What a joy to see how Katallasso is reaching beyond healthcare to impact the lives of people for the Kingdom of God!
