I hope your January was safe as we kicked off the new year. Our weather continues to be a hot - cold 24-hour roller coaster. That is a major reason we choose to live here...right?
Kidding aside, I want to thank our public works crews who continue to work on our streets during times of ice and snow. You probably saw many trucks out during all hours of the day and night. You can follow the progress of the City of Wichita snow plow/treatment trucks on a Google map. Follow this link. The map can be zoomed and panned as usual to see what ever area you desire. We know that February and March can often bring another blast or two, so please be careful, cautious and courteous.
Earthquake update: I know many of you are curious about the recent earthquake activity. At his weekly media briefing, Mayor Longwell provided results of some investigations we've undertaken following the uptick in earthquake activity we've received. Following the earthquakes on January 6, City staff began assessing facilities and infrastructure to ensure that no damage resulted that would impact public safety or normal day-to-day activity. Like many homes, City buildings and infrastructure experienced some minor damage as a result of the pair of earthquakes that occurred. More information can be found here.
I had a chance to have a one-on-one meeting with our new Police Chief, Gordon Ramsay. If first impressions are any indication, I believe we have the right leader, at the right time. He brings a fresh look, and he is undertaking very extensive evaluations of our current police force and procedures. He already has some innovative ideas that he plans to propose. I look forward to Chief Ramsay being our leader, and we should all welcome him and his family to Wichita.
A major part of City government is Police, roads, and city infrastructure. That is the basic blocking and tackling of our Wichita City government. I have provided this update for your benefit.
In keeping with the theme of blocking and tackling, I wish all of you a happy and safe Super Bowl weekend, and hope your team wins!

Engelken Chiropractic & Acupuncture Moves to New Office
The Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting event at the new offices of Engelken Chiropractic & Acupuncture.

Rosa Parks Project
February is Black History Month. Black History is American History, and this month we will be engaging in an exciting project to recognize a great American icon whose story helped us in our journey to equality: Rosa Parks.
Wichita Transit, the City Communication Department and the Office of Community Services have partnered to sponsor activities to help 5th and 6th grade students learn the story of Rosa Parks while at the same time learn important skills in research and communications.
This pilot program will encourage 5th and 6th graders at L'Overture, Gordon Parks, Brooks, Spaght and Mueller elementary schools to create a poster or write an essay to teach others about Rosa Parks and the significance of her accomplishments.
Winners in both categories will be chosen from each school.
We will also be wrapping a bus to replicate the bus Rosa Parks rode in December 1955.
The Rosa Parks bus will be in service for one year. In addition to regular route service, the bus will be available as an educational tool and to support diversity initiatives in the community.
We plan on unveiling the winners of the poster and essay contest and showcasing the newly wrapped bus on February 25.

Let's Caffeinate Wichita!
1 Million Cups is a free, weekly national program designed to educate, engage, and connect entrepreneurs.
Developed by the Kauffman Foundation, 1MC is based on the notion that entrepreneurs discover solutions and network over a million cups of coffee.
Join us every Wednesday starting February 10, 2016 at WSU Old Town on 238 N. Mead.
Attendance is free. Doors open at 8:30am. Presentations run from 9 -10am.
Each presentation ends with an audience Q&A where the last question is always "What can we as a community do to support you as a startup?"

Kick Off Spring
on the Green!
Provide a work experience opportunity for a youth!
The 2016 Jobs FORE Youth Golf tournament will be held on Thursday, April 28, 2016, at Auburn Hills Golf Course in Wichita.
This will be the 4th fundraising golf tournament for
Jobs FORE Youth. Last year, they raised approximately $10,000 to support Youth Work Experience and Internships. They want to exceed last year's amount, and need sponsors and/or team registrations for the tournament.
The tournament will begin with lunch at 11:30 a.m. and tee off at 12:30. Awards are anticipated to begin at 5:00 p.m. The cost to register a team of 4 is $360, and includes 18 hole green fees, cart, lunch, participant gift and unlimited warm up at the driving range. Individual Registration is available as well for $95 per person. The
registration deadline is April 20th, so get this on your calendar now and plan to register early to ensure that your team is in the running!
All funds raised from this event will go to support work experiences and summer jobs for youth!

Wichita Film Series Returns for 30th Year:
Library Presents Academy Award® Shorts
This year marks the 30th year the Wichita Public Library will screen Academy Award short subject films, free and open to the public. Since 1986 the Library has annually previewed the short films nominated in the animated, live action and documentary categories. Wichita is one of the first in the nation to provide a way for the community to see these films.
The Library will provide opportunities at various times, dates and locations for people to see the films in advance of the live televised broadcast of the Academy Awards on Sunday, February 28. Screenings of the films in all shorts categories will happen on Saturday, February 20 at the Orpheum and also on Saturday, February 27 at the 21st Street Warren Theatre, both starting at 10:00 a.m. Between February 21 and 25, the Library will host 6 other screenings at the Central Library and four of its branch libraries.
To qualify as a short subject for Academy Award consideration, films must be less than 40 minutes in running time (including all credits). Shorts are typically not rated and may not be suitable for all audiences. Some nominated films may not be available for screening due to rights limitations.

Get Healthy!
The Heath & Wellness Coalition of Wichita is
now accepting registrations for the 2016 Think Tank series. Think Tank is designed to motivate wellness professionals to dig deep to uncover what success means for a worksite wellness program. Participants will network with other human resource and health promotion professionals to explore solutions for challenging issues surrounding health in the workplace.
This year's Think Tank series will be four sessions and healthy lunch is included in the cost of registration. The cost of the four-session series is $60 and individual sessions are $20. All sessions will be held in the Community Room at the Downtown YMCA located at 402 North Market. The 2016 Think Tank series will meet from 11:30am - 1:00pm on February 16, April 19, June 21, and October 18.

If more than one person is attending from your worksite, please make sure that each person attending registers in order to ensure an accurate count for lunch!

Citizens Police Academy Accepting Applications
Applications are being accepted for the academy
that will run from February 22 to May 16, 2016.
The Citizen Police Academy (CPA) is a 13-week program designed to provide a working knowledge and background of the Wichita Police Department and Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office, and to foster a closer relationship between the agencies and the community. It provides an avenue for community involvement and provides firsthand experience of policing.
The Academy provides an opportunity for citizens to learn more about local law enforcement, ask questions, and gain a more thorough understanding of the inner workings of the Wichita Police Department and the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office. The Academy is also a means for participants and police personnel to share information and ideas about the police profession. The Academy provides for improved community/police relationships, enhanced cooperation, and reduced stereotyping.
Some of the topics and activities Academy attendees will participate in include:
- Patrol operations including riding assignments with a Wichita Police Officer or Sedgwick County Sheriff's Deputy.
- Overview of Investigations.
- Presentations by the Gang Unit.
- Wichita/Sedgwick County Law Enforcement Firearms Training Facility tour.
- Exploited and Missing Child Unit, Homicide and Robbery Investigations.
- Tours of the Wichita Police Department Crime Lab, Records Bureau, Sheriff's Crime Lab and the 911 Emergency Communications Center.
- Tour of the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility including an opportunity to sample jail food.
- Overview of Community Affairs and Community Policing.
- Air Section helicopter "fly-in" and presentation.
- Traffic radar demonstration.
- SWAT Team demonstration.
- Bomb Squad demonstration.
Persons interested in attending a Citizen Police Academy must live, work, or attend school within Sedgwick County. Persons must be at least 20 years of age, have no prior felony convictions and no outstanding warrants. Applicants must provide two personal references.

Southbound Webb will have left turns prohibited sometime starting in early December and last for a few weeks while Wildcat works on ATT duct near the intersection. Message boards are already giving traffic a heads up. Exact start date will be advertised once we're closer.

Follow the Snow Plows Guide
You can see where the City of Wichita snow plow/treatment trucks are on a Google map. This
map can be zoomed and panned as usual to see what ever area you desire.
Each of the 50 vehicles has a dot and a flag that shows the unit ID number. The color of the dot indicates the status of the vehicle.
If the vehicle is moving an arrow will give the general direction of travel.
The map also shows where each truck has been for the last hour. The color of each trail has no significance. They are selected just to make it easier to distinguish the trail of one vehicle from another. You can turn the trails feature off by unchecking the box at the top right of the map. Next to the trail check box, you can click on the length of time for the trails to change it from one hour to 15 minutes or one day and then back to one hour.
