                                                                  5th February 2016

Note from Mrs Sellers

It was superb to see Year 6 St Winifred's students looking calm and confident as they came to The Gregg Entrance Assessment on Saturday. They arrived along with 75 other children and...having had a 'taste' of our Entrance papers in Year 5 were able to make short work of the assessments as well as meets lots of new friends. Mrs Caddy and Mr Milton also came with them alongside their parents - it was lovely to see everyone looking so happy and positive....I am sure there will be some more exciting news to follow - well done everyone!
I can't believe how quickly my first three weeks with you have gone.  I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know your children and I think I have learnt all their names now!  They have been so welcoming and it has been a pleasure to see them working hard and learning with such enthusiasm.  They may have told you about 'The Golden Book of Fabulousness' and it is great to see the list of names being read out in assembly getting longer.  I am also really looking forward to the 'Achievements' Assembly' on Thursday so please encourage them to bring in their certificates etc to share with us all.

We had an exciting morning with the Preschool Pirates on Tuesday - there were stripey tops and pirate patches galore!  It was nice to see that the Preschool Pirates brought their shipmates (parents) with them and we all enjoyed joining in the activities organised by Captains Carter and Cutler!

Next week, the children are doing a survey about the summer menu and we will be submitting their thoughts to Mrs Morris.  You may wish to talk to them about this and encourage them to contribute some healthy and exciting menus and ideas!

I look forward to seeing you at Parents' Evenings and don't forget we have an INSET day on Friday 12th February so no school for the children.  May I take this opportunity to say have a lovely half term break and also to thank you for the welcome you have afforded me - it is much appreciated.

Sainsbury's Active Kids Vouchers

It is that time of the year again when "Active Kids" vouchers can be collected from Sainsbury's to help support the school. The vouchers pay for invaluable sports equipment which helps increase the Physical Education experience for the students and adds variety to the curriculum. If you give your vouchers to the your children to bring in that would be very much appreciated.
Form 3 and 4 Trip to the old Southampton City walls
Last week on the 28th January on a clear day, Forms 3 and 4 braved the cool but refreshing weather to walk around the Old City Walls of Southampton. As well as taking in the history of the old city, pupils were making investigations into the changes that have occurred over the years and identifying where new technology is visible. After being dropped off outside St Michael's Church and the Tudor House museum, Forms 3 and 4 ventured north to Cement Terrace where they could view the vast construction site for the new Watermark extension to West Quay. Powerful machinery, steel scaffold and towering cranes came into conflict with stone walls and the old shoreline of Southampton's medieval past.
Stone and wood was met with concrete, plastic and electricity during the hour long excursion, which also took pupils along the former waterfront and back to St Michael's Church, to contrast the old and new developments that have occurred in Southampton over several centuries.
