Celebrate! Happy Birthday to our National Parks!

One hundred years ago, the US Congress established
 the National Park Service. What idea could be more American than setting aside lands, not just for kings, noblemen, and the very rich, but for everyone and for all time? As Ken Burns says, "National Parks are the Declaration of Independence applied to the landscape."
The Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club is saluting the National Park Service centennial with a
#Hikethe100 campaign. We'll be your guide to 100 adventures (or more!) on national parklands from the Santa Monica Mountains, to the Channel Islands, to Yosemite, to Joshua Tree, and beyond!

Don't Let Developers Control the Coastal Commission
|
The California Coastal Act is a key reason our coastline  hasn't been entirely dominated by large-scale development. Over the Act's 40-year existence, developers have worked hard to weaken it. Every so often, they aim their fire at the Commission's executive director, the staff member charged with making sure developments are properly reviewed and that the Coastal Act is enforced. Governor Brown has the power to call off the drive to dump the executive director. But he needs to hear from you before he'll consider exercising that power.

We invite you to work with us whether you're interested in Renewable Energy, Climate Change, Clean Air, Stopping Fracking and Fossil Fuels, Water Conservation, Sustainability, or preservation of the Santa Monica Mountains. You can make a difference!

Mojave Trails, Sand to Snow, and Castle Mountains monuments
|
Senator Dianne Feinstein introduced bills earlier this session  of Congress and in past sessions to designate three new National Monuments in our desert: The Mojave Trails, Sand to Snow, and Castle Mountains monuments. These monuments, as described on page 2 of Words of the Wild, would help wildlife by providing protected corridors and increasing buffer areas around existing national areas. Please send a message to Senator Feinstein to help her establish support for the proposed new monuments.

With support from the Los Angeles County Board of  Supervisors, South Bay Clean Power is a nonprofit Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) program that is being established to purchase green energy for residents at lower prices than the current structure of for-profit investor-owned utilities now allow.
