BEST OF THE WEEK
FEBRUARY 1 - FEBRUARY 5, 2016

Every Friday this school year, "Best of the Week" will recognize
St. Edward High School's commitment to authentic instruction by
highlighting the people and programs that define the St. Ed's experience.

LESSON OF THE WEEK
JOE COTNER'S COURAGE SUPPORTS THE ST. KIZITO FOUNDATION
On Thursday, St. Edward Director of Service & Outreach Rick Kubrak '07 took a group of students to the First Friday Club of Cleveland to hear Fr. Don Dunson speak about his work in East Africa and his founding of the St. Kizito Foundation.  The St. Kizito Foundation helps some of the poorest families and orphaned children in the world get a good Catholic education as well as food, water, and medical needs.

St. Edward students were amazed and moved by the work being done by Fr. Dunson and his foundation. Following Fr. Don's speech, junior Joseph Cotner was so moved that he took the stage to announce that he started to fill up a glass with money for the St. Kizito Foundation and for Fr. Don's work in East Africa.

The crowd collected over $200, which will cover more than half of a child's tuition for a year, through Joe's impromptu request.  Thank you to Fr. Don for sharing with our students the power of servant leadership and bringing hope to others, and to Joe for his competence and courage - a great lesson for all, rooted in our Holy Cross mission.

TEACHERS OF THE WEEK
MR. SHAUN KINLEY & MS. MOLLY KING
St. Andre Besette, C.S.C. once said, "it is with the smallest brushes that artists paint the most beautiful pictures." That concept is exemplified when you look at the St. Edward student art work on display in our hallways. A range of students enter Mr. Kinley or Ms. King's classes each year. Some may have great talents that they have been honing for years, and others might be taking their first art class, but all students leave these classes having been challenged to grow as artists and having created art that the entire community can be proud of.

In courses like Sports Art, Mr. Kinley unlocks hidden potential in his students by teaching them how to divide and conquer; to take a seemingly huge project and break it down to its component parts. Through the grid project students learn the value and importance of planning, design, and focus. The projects that are on display from Ms. King's classes demonstrate just how much the brotherhood at St. Edward, coupled with the inspiration from dedicated teachers, makes St. Edward better each year. Ms. King inspires her students to rise to the challenge displayed through art work of previous classes and every year students' sculptures seem to get even better than those of the previous year. Ms. King instills confidence in her students to believe that they can create anything they set their minds to and that they can continue to grow and improve as artists.

For their guidance of the talented students in St. Edward's visual arts program, Molly King and Shaun Kinley are this week's Teachers of the Week.
