The Most Recent Additions to our Land Trust

With the addition of the following two easements, CLT now protects approximately 61,574 acres!

For Ducks, LLC
In January, CLT protected an additional 194 acres in Clarendon County that consists primarily of lands devoted to agriculture and forestry, with some waterfowl management.   The property is located near Upper Lake Marion and is an important part of the "Waterfowl Corridor," which is a series of closely connected private tracts managed for waterfowl and other wetland wildlife, and has enhanced the overall wildlife values of the nearby 13,000 acre Santee National Wildlife Refuge.

 DDK Management, LLC
With the addition of the DDK Management property, CLT added approximately 1,865 acres to its roster with the closing on this easement in Kershaw County bordering Spears Creek and the Wateree River. Located within the COWASEE Basin, this property is also part of the "Wateree River Conservation Corridor," a large expanse of 25,000 acres of connected private properties along both sides of the Wateree River in Kershaw, Richland and Sumter Counties.  The Wateree River Conservation Corridor includes the state's newest Wildlife Management Area, Wateree River Heritage Preserve, which is managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

Billy Cate Named
South Carolina Tree Farmer of the Year

CLT is pleased to announce that CLT Land Protection Consultant, William P. "Billy" Cate received the South Carolina Tree Farmer of the Year Award from the South Carolina Certified Tree Farm Committee at their annual me e ting in the fall.  Billy is a familiar face around CLT as he has been involved with the Land Trust for over a decade, having served as both a Board member from 2002-2008 and as the Executive Director for the organization from 2008-2012.

Cate is a second-generation tree farmer and is dedicated to land conservation and the proper management of his own 1,268 woodland acre farm, known as Buckeye Farm.   Cate's parents, Nilla and Charlie Cate, won the same award for their work on the same tree farm in 1979.  Billy commented, "I think they would be pleased indeed and I thank them for instilling in me a love for land a sense of place and teaching me to do the best you can with what you have."

Cate manages Buckeye Farm with three primary objectives in mind including: timber production, wildlife management and aesthetics.  Committed to protecting and preserving his property for future generations, he and his family placed a conservation easement on their property in 2001. Congratulations Billy!
