Students Receive White Coats at Special Ceremony
More than 150 new Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Clinical Nurse Leader students received their white coats at a ceremony held February 2 at UMSON. The purpose of the White Coat program is to instill a commitment to providing compassionate care among future health professionals entering nursing schools. Nursing students at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) will receive their white coats at a ceremony on February 17 at USG.
Welcome New Faculty & Staff
Terria Blandon, BA, has joined the Department of Family and Community Health as a program management specialist. Terria most recently served as an administrative assistant in the University of Maryland School of Medicine's Department of Neurology, Faculty Practices, Inc. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Strayer University.
 
Vince Kloskowski, MA , has been appointed Associate Dean for Student and Academic Services. He brings an extensive background in higher education administration and teaching, most recently serving as Assistant Dean of the College and Director of the Academic Center, and as an adjunct faculty member, at St. Joseph's College of Maine. Vince holds a Master of Arts degree in Higher Education Administration from Boston College, Lynch School of Education.
 
Deborah Prout, MAS, has been appointed Special Assistant to the Dean. She brings a wide range of experience, including government, business, and nonprofit entities, having held positions at the American College of Physicians, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the U.S. House of Representatives. Deborah most recently served as Special Assistant to the President at Sierra Nevada College. She holds a Master of Administrative Science degree from the Johns Hopkins University.

Kathleen Kauffman, MS, BSN '78 , who retired in 2012 after a 25-year career at the University of Utah College of Nursing, has had a lifetime passion for nursing history. Docents Needed for Living History Museum
The UMSON Living History Museum is seeking alumni volunteers to serve as docents. The museum is open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday during the academic semesters. Docents are also needed for occasional special events, such school tours and open houses for new and prospective students. Scheduling is flexible. The UMSON Alumni Association is working with Harris Connect on a new version of Alumni Today, previously updated in 2011. The publication contains comprehensive biographical listings with contact, career, and family information of our graduates. To ensure that our data is as current as possible, Harris Connect will contact alumni to verify that the information we will print is accurate and complete. Phyllis Lovito, coordinator, Department of Family and Community Health (FCH) is the latest recipient of the UMSON Staff Excellence Award. She was recognized for going above and beyond her job duties to make UMSON a better place for faculty, staff, and students. As chair of the UMSON Staff Council's Professional Development Committee, Phyllis coordinates regular lunch-and-learn activities and professional development opportunities to enhance the lives of staff members.

Ann Mech, JD, MS '78, BSN '76, RN, assistant professor and legal affairs coordinator, has been appointed chair of the Maryland CareFirst Board of Directors. She has been a member of the Board since 2013, and is the only nurse on the Board. Click here to read more.
 
Kathleen Michael, PhD, RN, CRRN , associate professor, has been appointed chair of UMSON's Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health. In this role, Michael is responsible for daily operations as she builds collaborative relationships both inside and outside the department. She will work with faculty and staff to achieve the academic, research, practice, and service initiatives of the School. Click here to read more.
Jacqueline Mitchell, MS '07, CRNA, clinical instructor and director of clinical education, Nurse Anesthesia specialty, traveled to Granada with her family during the holidays, where they handed out book bags filled with school supplies at the local parish school. Mitchell, who lived in Granada as a child, plans on making this an annual trip with her family.

Valerie Rogers, PhD '09, MS '97, RN, CPNP , assistant professor, was awarded a two-year, $100,000 grant from the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation to study circadian rhythm dysregulation in adolescents who have completed cancer treatment. Investigators will also trial a morning bright light therapy intervention as a potential non-pharmacological therapy to improve circadian rhythms and fatigue in these adolescents.

PhD student BoKyum Yang received a $7,500 grant from the Southern Nursing Research Society for her study, "The Impact of NP Independent Prescriptive Authority on Pediatric Medication Use in Medicaid-Insured Youth."
