Ministry on the Move
Big Idea: Mini-Retreats
by Denise Johnson, Family Ministries Co-Director, Central States Conference

W hat do you do when you have marriage retreats and 18-20 couples attend??  While that is a great number, yet when the conference territory in which you minister goes from Colorado to Missouri and the Canadian border to Northern New Mexico; 20 couples is a miniscule number!  That was our concern as the Family Ministry Directors of the Central States Conference.
Then the adage "If the people won't come to the mountain, take the mountain to the people!" came to mind.  Many couples due to childcare issues, financial constraints, care of aging parents or work schedules find it difficult to take a weekend to be away from home.  Yet these are the very couples who need to have encouragement and enrichment to their marriages. So over the last 6 months we have implemented - "Right to Romance" Marriage Mini-Retreats. These Mini-retreats have many of the factors of a weekend retreat but are hosted by local churches and allow their members, members in neighboring churches and from the community to experience a day of marriage enhancement.
Breakfast during the mini-retreat.
The day starts with a breakfast at the church followed by interactive workshops and inventories during the morning.  The attendees then worship with the church family and serve in worship service as the platform participants for the order of service as the church pastor delivers a sermon on love and marriage.  There follows a fellowship dinner and then the afternoon session resumes with interactive games, scavenger hunts and finally a romance covenant between the spouses to follow the example for the "Greatest Romancer" - Jesus!  The local family ministries leader networks with the Church Hospitality and Children's Ministry teams to provide the meals and childcare as needed.
The finale of the Mini-retreat is a couple's social where the couple can let their hair down and laugh and remember all the fun times.  Games, laughter and fellowship with other couples spark a desire to make a couple's event part of the local church's quarterly Family Ministries' calendar.
We believe that through these Marriage Mini-retreats, marriages are strengthen as couples learn tools and skills to enhance communication to each other and a re-commitment to enhancing their communion with the "Greatest Romancer".
