Greetings!

"The only real elegance is in the mind; if you've got that, the rest really comes from it."

The Next Era of Hair Fashion
A New Style Generation has Fully Arrived . . .

Chanel 2013 Cruise Wear
< 2010s ... For some time now fashion has been moving in a new direction, towards an irreverent departure from "natural".  These new looks are artistic, contrived & bold.  They break the "rules" of the past.  We see them not only with performers like Katie Perry, Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj ... but on the streets in most cities, being worn by everyone from 8 to 70 year olds.

The movie Hunger Games, while about a futuristic society, has relevance today.  The images above are from the new 2013 Chanel Cruise Wear collection, which was very recently shot at the Palace of Versailles .... designed by Karl Lagerfeld, of course.  As is often heard ... art imitates life!

HousewivesofOC > 1980s ... the live-in-the-sun generation, which is wonderfully exemplified by The Real Housewives of Orange County.  This is the Hollywood starlet, sun- bronzed look ... and while attempting to look natural, it is actually very contrived.  The look is definitely a monochromatic color harmony, with sun tanned skin and sun highlighted hair.  Highlights, extensions, spray tans (tanning parlors), artificial nails and various forms of cosmetic surgery all contribute to the 80s era style.  Probably best symbolized by the famous images of Farrah Fawcett, this was the fullest pendulum swing away from the mid-60s Hippies, which truly were natural.

It's time has now long past . . . ask your Dermatologist.

Many other sub-trends occurred during the complex 80s ... everything from Dorothy Hamill to Glam & Punk Rock.  The era was definitely one of divergence and confusion.  From a historical perspective, this is the "Blow Dry Generation" ... starting in the mid-1960s with the advent of blow-drying, daily shampoos, and touchable, freer hairstyles.  Also significant was the shift to "precision haircutting", where the cut became more important than the styling, as hairstyles became simpler and much easier to maintain.  Hairstylists were now expected to be good haircutters, rather than merely hairdressers. This amazing era started in 1964 with the impact of the famous Vidal Sassoon with his "5 point Cut" (Mary Quant), and the Wedge haircut of Sassoon's associate, Trevor Sorbie.

Queen ElizabethPaula Deen < 1950s  ... Paula Deen and Queen Elizabeth ideally represent this generation, who never understood blowdrying ... and continues to this day, going to a salon every week for a "set".  Until recently, this style would have reflected the majority of those living in most retirement communities (Leisure World).  However, that is definitely changing, and it won't be long until those same communities are largely 80s style.

The "Set Generation" ... reached it's zenith in the early to mid-1960s with the "bubble hair style", which required a nightly roller-set, considerable teasing, and careful finish styling, with plenty of hairspray.

Proper analysis of social and historical trends is very complicated, and difficult to do briefly. This is merely a generalized over-view ... hopefully it will stimulate thought.  The next time you are in the salon, I'd enjoy discussing it further.  For more detailed information about these Eras of Fashion ... including the

What Does This Mean To Me?
My Advice . . .

Change should be fun ... it should be an adventure at any age.  In fact, I believe that as you get older, continuing to enbrace new ideas is a fantastic way of staying young.

Keep exploring and testing yourself.  Along with my carefully designed enhancements, your style will continue to evolve ... staying current and relevant.  And, this can be achieved in subtle steps ... it will be a rewarding and age-defying experience!

Diana Sassoon Tribute
Tatum & Maddie's Hair Adventure ... Part 3
They are fully committed . . .

Again this October, Diane and I traveled to Florida so I could give my three young ladies fresh haircuts.  They each choose to go even further, with more dramatic styles.
Debbie - Oct 2012

 > Debbie . . . has an asymmetrical align bob, which is perfect for her naturally full, wavy hair.  By cutting in definite style, with contrasting dimensions, the cut is very easy for her to style.

Tatum - Oct 2012
< Tatum ... although she occasionally mentions that not everyone of her school friends likes (or understands) her short cuts, she continues to love her hair short, and the many styling options that are possible. Both she and Maddie love wearing hats, and their new cuts work even better under a hat, than their long hair.

Maddie - Oct 2012 > Maddie ... continues to thoroughly enjoy her hair short!  She has never looked back, and has no issue with showing the full drama of her cut, by exposing the under-cut completely.

Maddie - Oct 2012 (Hat Day)
Tatum - Oct 2012Off to school the morning after their new cuts ... for Maddie, it was "Hat Day".

Her New Look . . .

Sarah is a Producer at Merit/Andrew ... a "boutique production house" here in the OC.  A very creative and enthusiastic artist herself, she was excited to develop a fresh new look which would reflect her dynamic personality.

Sarah Marr (before) Sarah Marr (1st visit) We're working on our third appointment together, and spending necessary time to really get to know each other.  That allows even better customization, when the styles best capture her inner spirit.

I am looking forward to seeing where our adventure leads us.
