Esther Williams
Esther Williams

"It's kind of fun to do the impossible."

- Walt Disney (1901-1966)

As many of you know, Esther Williams passed away in June.  She was a US champion & world class swimmer before being "discovered" to become one of Metro-Goldwyn-Meyers biggest stars of the late 40s-early 50s.  She missed the opportunity to compete in the 1940 Summer Olympics, because of the outbreak of World War II.

Along with Johnny Weissmuller, she successfully made the transition from athlete to movie star.  Her movies included grand Technicolor finales conceived by the famous Busby Berkeley, whose elaborate musical production numbers often involved complex geometric patterns.

I hope you are having a wonderful summer!

1998 to present . . .

One of the most wonderful aspects of being a hairstylist, is developing relationships which last for years ... in some cases, nearly a life-time.  I have been honored to have many long-time clients, some for over 30 years.  Both of these lovely young women were introduced to me by their moms ... and both have enjoyed allowing me to photography them numerous times over the years. Click on the more links below to see galleries of their many looks.

Tess . . . we met in 1998, when her mom, long-time client Beth, decided it was time for us to get together.  At the time, she was 14 yrs old, and had already exhibited a strong interest in fashion.

Before each visit, she would do careful research on a particular celebrity, past or current ... and even design sew outfits following the theme.  I would design a hairstyle to capture the feeling.  Few clients have had so many dramatically different looks!

Today, Tess is married, a mother, and lives in Seattle.  We had the opportunity recently to spend time again, as she had decided that her long hair was becoming less workable with her having a young son.  more

Sarah ... another long-time client, Ginny, brought her daughter to me also in 1998, when I highlighted and cut her hair.  For this latest series of images, I set her hair using electric rollers, and she chose a fun dress with a decided 50s flair.

The large image on the left, utilizes the HDR technique, where 3 images taken with different aperture settings, are then combined for a single rich image.  You'll need to view the enlargement to fully appreciate the effect of the extra wide dynamic range.

The two smaller images show what is possible using Photoshop to manipulate image for dramatic impact.

Sarah is now a website designer for UCI.  more

Art Photography . . .

Sometimes, the result we want from a photo session are images which express creativity and drama.  They make a statement.

Tracey is a art class model, who is very comfortable posing in front of my camera.  Although we have only known each for a short time, we've had fun exploring increasingly dramatic cuts.  She is very excited with this "flapper girl" inspired asymmetric.

Several of the images have been treated with Photoshop to increase the contrast and depth of color.  This technique enhances important focal points of an image to better tell a story.

Stay tuned for our next adventure!  more

The Latest
New Summer Looks . . .

Katie ... was introduced to me by her grand-mother, Harriet, who was a fairy new client herself.  Shortly after, I had the chance to work with her mom, Pam ... so they are now three generation clients.  Very special, indeed.

Catri ... my current "cover girl" is at it again!  She is as adventurous as Tess years ago ... wearing almost every possible color and cut. We have quite a gallery of her many looks!

Nelly ... loves her hair short!  In fact, she'd wear it even shorter, if her mom would agree. Lori, however, wants her daughter to look as feminine as possible, considering Nelly loves wearing sport jerseys!

Janette & Rachel ... are great sisters who often come to the salon together. During this latest visit, they both went much shorter with their styles!

Tricia ... my "cover girl" twice in 2007 with her stunning red hair and dramatic cuts.

Diana ... is perhaps my most daring senior client, with has great sense of style.

Catherine ... a new client who is having fun "re-discovering" herself.  more
