SAANYS Practices
(formerly the Journal)
Supporting ELL / ENL Learners

The theme for the next issue of SAANYS' VanguardPractices magazine is supporting and enhancing services for English language (ELL) learners.

According to the New York State Education Department (SED), New York is an incredibly diverse state with more than 200 languages being spoken in our schools. In addition to our current diverse population, SED reports that for the 2015-16 school year the ELL population in New York State increased by 6,400 students.

Although public schools are working diligently to provide appropriate services and create welcoming environments for these children, the logistical challenges are significant for school administrators. In this issue, we invite educators to share their best practices and successful strategies in meeting the challenges of educating a growing ELL (and often migrant) population. Issues to address can include, but are not limited to:
    • School resources, including staffing.
    • Family engagement and school climate, including the benefits of an increasing global school community.
    • Social/emotional needs, dropout prevention, unaccompanied students.
    • Successful strategies for ELL instruction.
    • Compliance issues: AYP / APPR implications / graduation requirements.
DEADLINE EXTENDED! Submit articles by February 8 to [email protected]. Articles should be no longer than 1,500 words in length.
