International Women's Day
 
The theme for 2016, Oppression to Opportunity aims to inspire you to reflect upon women's past, present and future challenges, while celebrating successes and achievements! This year, we're doing things a little differently. Our annual potluck will take place at the Women's Centre on March 8th from 5-8pm. Join us for some music, great activities and so much more!

There will also be a series of workshops around International Women's Day, starting at the end of February. To learn more about IWD events or see the list of workshops on violence, childcare, women in politics and more, click here.

Welcoming New Students
The winter semester is underway and we're celebrating the arrival of three new practicum students! Julia will be helping out the Basic Needs team, while Carole works in Community Development and Christina supports the Girl Power program. Read about them here
Scotiabank Marathon Sign-Up
Thinking of stepping up your step count? Registration is open for the 2016 Scotiabank Marathon Charity Challenge. Last year, Women's Centre runners and walkers raised over $17,000 for the basic needs program! Keep an eye open for prizes, teams and other announcements.

Women Should Know Each Other

We are teaming up with We Should Know Each Other for a women-only evening of building community, laughing, making new memories - and maybe even a new friend! Poverty Through Many Lenses  

Poverty is an issue that affects women in unique ways. Volunteers from the Social Issues Committee organized a Poverty Through Many Lenses workshop a few weeks ago to bring together women from various walks of life.They talked about how poverty influences their day-to-day experiences and changes they'd like to see. Dedicated staff members are integral to the Women's Centre's mission to be every woman's place for support, connections and community. The Women's Centre invests time and effort in creating a working environment where staff can thrive.
We are currently hiring a Learning and Events Coordinator and a Community Development Coordinator. Job descriptions are on our website

Momentum Financial Series | Tuesdays in Feb, 6-8pm
We're teaming up with Momentum to host a 4-part workshop series on budgeting, consumerism, banking & credit and assets. Attend all 4 sessions to receive a completion certificate.

Gay-Straight Alliances | Wednesday, Feb 3, 6-8pm
In this Social Issues Discussion session, Dr. Tonya Callaghan will speak about the implications of the new Bill 10 on the development of Gay-Straight Alliances (GSA) in Alberta schools.

Dream Catcher | Thursday, Feb 18 & 25, 6-8pm
Join us to learn how to create your own dream catcher. Dreams catchers are about expressing yourself and each one is unique to you.

Community Events 

Valentine's Day Women's Memorial March | Feb. 14, 6:30pm Although gendered violence affects all women, Indigenous women face compounded and unique risks.The Memorial March works to raise awareness and inspire change in regards to violence against women. It will start at Scarboro United Church.

Public Forum: Housing is a Human Right | March 12, 2-6pm
Learn about issues faced by tenants, affordable/ subsidized housing, National Housing Strategy and rent controls at the Sunalta Community Centre. Hosted by Women Together Ending Poverty.
