Fifth Grader Takes Top Spot in Geo Bee
Lakehill fifth grader Jon Paul Ramey knew that Lake Tanganyika forms the entire border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania to the east.

Jon Paul was declared Lakehill's champion after answering two questions correctly in the championship round of the Lakehill Geo Bee. Sixth grader Mara Sandberg, the other finalist, claimed second place. Sixth grader Alexander Dondis took third, while seventh grader Nathan Lewis placed fourth. Abby Dondis, the only fourth grader to compete, took fifth place.

The competition, held on January 21, was open to all students in grades four through eight. There were 13 competitors, four of whom answered all seven questions correctly in the preliminary round. The bee consisted of seven rounds of questions, a final round with five finalists, and a championship round for the final two.  Preparation for the bee took place in Geography Club meetings, where the 14 members met every other week to prepare.

This is the 28th year the National Geographic Society has organized the bee, and each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in this entertaining and challenging test of geographic knowledge.

As a school winner, Jon Paul will advance to the next level of competition, a 70-question written examination. The top 100 test takers in the state will then compete for the state title. Each state winner will advance to Washington, D.C. for the national finals in May.

"Jon Paul and Mara showed exceptional depth of geography knowledge in the Championship Round," said Patty Pippen, Geography Club sponsor. " It was  a joy to have all these students be a part of the club and competition. I encourage all future fourth through eighth graders to join the Geography Club next year and make it a goal to compete in the National Geographic Geo Bee."

Teams Name Basketball Beau and Sweetheart
Lakehill's school spirit was in full swing at the Middle and Upper School Pep Rally on January 22 during Freshman Visit Day. During the Pep Rally, seniors Kaeli Bunger and Kason Burt were announced as Basketball Beau and Sweetheart.

Toward the end of each basketball season, it is a Lakehill tradition to select students who are the basketball teams' number one fans. The Sweetheart is selected by the boys' basketball team and the Beau is selected by the girls' basketball team. Burt and Bunger were also presented at the Varsity Basketball game on Friday night.

Serving Others
Upper School Students Mobilize for Day of Service
Lakehill's commitment to serving others took on new meaning on January 22 with the school's fifth annual Upper School Day of Service.

While eighth graders were busy learning more about high school at the Freshman Visit Day, Upper School students headed out in a variety of directions to lend a helping hand to their community.  Students and faculty logged more than 500 hours of service before returning to campus for a celebratory lunch from Burger House with the eighth graders.

Freshman worked with homeless children at Vogel Alcove, while sophomores visited and played Bingo with senior citizens at The Brady Center.

Juniors sorted food and prepared food bags for children at the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB), packing more than 14,000 meals for hungry North Texas children.

Seniors joined forces with Reading Partners, to provide tutoring to students in three under-served elementary schools in DISD.

"Volunteering with Reading Partners was such a rewarding experience," said senior Audrey Castaigne. "Seeing the impact that program has on the children is so inspiring." Senior Will Crutchfield agreed. "I never thought I'd be able to help a kid improve his reading, but Reading Partners makes it easy to be successful. I did it, and I am really happy to have had the experience."

Sophomore Shelby Britton says she plans to visit The Brady Center again soon. "The woman I met shared her life story with me, and it honestly changed me as a human being. She taught me so many life lessons in the short amount of time I spent with her."

"This group did an amazing job with the volunteer projects we had for them," said Brian Millage, Volunteer Coordinator for Vogel Alcove. "They are truly phenomenal, and are welcome to visit us again any time!"

This Week at the ESC
T his week, the fourth grade  made observations about the avocado seeds they planted during their first trip to the ESC.

They also learned about different types of trees. They discovered the differences between gymnosperms and angiosperms, and how to identify if an angiosperm is a monocot or a dicot by looking at eight types of seeds. Finally, they learned about how different species are able to disperse their seeds in different ways. They even discovered some trees were dependent upon extinct species like mammoths and ground sloths for their seed dispersal.
