YouthWorks Spotlight: JSS and RISE Recognition

On Thursday, December 17, 2015, we celebrated the accomplishments of 20 individuals who recently completed their participation in our JumpStart Success Program and 6 individuals who completed our RISE (Re-entry through Industry Specific Education) Project. We could not be prouder!

JumpStart Success is YouthWorks' signature job readiness and career exploration training curriculum for teenagers and young adults. RISE is a free vocational program for students ages 17-24 that gives students the opportunity to earn their GED® while receiving job training for work in construction and maintenance fields. Learn more about both programs at

HIRE Me Youth Complete Mock Interviews

In December, HIRE Me youth from Project Destiny completed their mock interviews. Although they were a little nervous, they did a great job and are now better prepared for their first official interview!

Goodwill GoodGuides®  Get Active

The GoodGuides program initiated a healthy lifestyle program with their Boys and Girls Club location. First, youth were given pedometers and talked about how many steps a day they were taking and how many they should take.  Next, several youth got a chance to visit the Altimate Air Trampoline Park. Each youth had an opportunity to challenge themselves by climbing up the rock wall, while also overcoming their fear of heights by jumping onto an air mattress! Students then checked their pedometers to see how many steps they took while being 'active.' The following week, The Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank stopped by the Club to give a cooking demonstration to the youth! They got a chance to make omelets using healthy ingredients that they could find at home.

The RISE Project Creates Holiday Trees

Over the past month, RISE students completed a recycled-goods project in which pallets were cut to create holiday trees located at the WDC building, Northside Common Ministries, and various Goodwill SWPA locations. This project allowed students to apply their knowledge in construction math, use a circular saw to cut into the pallet, orbital sander to smooth out the tree, and primer and paint to make the tree.

JANUARY JOB TIP:

"Make sure that your resume's objective is specific to the job you are applying for.  Being specific shows employers that you are familiar with the industry or field you're applying for. Leaving the objective too vague may lead to a hiring manager looking past your resume".
