Solar Project Coming to Delta Township
On December 7, 2015 the Township Board approved a Special Land Use Permit request from the groSolar Company to establish the region's first solar farms in Delta Township.

The solar farms will be erected on land owned by Mr. Terry Hanks in Sections 29 and 31 of the Township.   The 189 acre Section 29 site is the home of Sundance Riding Stables at 9250 Nixon Road.  The 102 acre Section 31 site is vacant agricultural land located on the west side of Nixon Road, approximately 1,400 feet south of Sundance Highway.  groSolar will be leasing the land area for the solar farms from Mr. Hanks.

As proposed, the solar panel arrays will cover approximately 75 acres of the 102 acre Section 31 parcel, and approximately 34 acres of the 189 acre Section 29 parcel.  The Sundance Riding Stables are located on the Section 29 parcel and will continue to operate alongside the solar farm.

groSolar is currently in the process of preparing detailed site plans for the project, which will be reviewed by the Delta Township Planning Commission early in 2016.  Questions regarding the project can be directed Gary Bozek in the Township Planning Division by phone at 517-323-8560 or via email at [email protected].

Former Days Inn Used for Police and Fire Training
The former Days Inn Property at the corner of Saginaw Hwy. and Canal St. has been the site of intensive police and fire training during the month of December.  The Delta Township Fire Department along with crews from Delhi Township, Lansing Township, Grand Ledge, and Windsor Township Fire Departments, worked in conjunction with MSP to conduct live fire suppression training.

Additionally, the department is working with EFI Global to conduct research on high-heat fires for the purpose of better identifying cause of future incidences. Full demolition of the building is estimated to begin before the end of 2015.

Above is a video from one of the research fires in a room at the Day's Inn on 12/17. The video shows the progression of a small (incipient stage) fire that starts at the edge of the bed and wall. The progression of the fire and smoke shows rapid change in conditions that take place during a fire. The progression of the fire goes to black-out smoke conditions in just under five minutes:
  • 1 minute  - lampshade melts and fire ignites the comforter on the first bed
  • 2 minutes - smoke begins to bank down in the room (Conditions in the room are not survivable at this point due to super-heated gasses and toxic smoke)
  • 3½  minutes - the comforter on the second bed starts to melt
  • 4 minutes - heavy smoke begins to develop at waist level
  • 4½ minutes the smoke level is less than 2 feet above the floor
  • Just under 5 minutes - as the camera is removed from the room, the dark, black smoke level drops to the floor
