FAITH UNSINKABLE
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice! ~Phil. 4.4
"Nothing you do for children is ever wasted" ~Garrison Keillor
Greetings Family of Faith, Body of Christ!
What a JOY UNSPEAKABLE Sunday we had, and this Sunday FAITH UNSINKABLE.
A new experiment- The Children's Pray Ground - opened with excitement and JOY. One parent commented: "We are here today because there is a place for me and my 2 year old. We can worship together." Together we are the BODY of Christ. Having said that, we do need to learn to be a bit quieter in the back, and that will be a work in progress. This pastor learned that to put a plastic Noah's ark with all the animals 2 by 2 on a hard wooden surface is NOISE waiting to happen- and it did! Soft toys, Pastor Linda! Again, we are learning. This week this area designated for our youngest worshipers (infant to grade 3) will be better.
Why are we doing this? A few reasons:
Children are a part of the Body of Christ.
There is nowhere in the Bible where it says children are a separate body. They are an important part of the church and should not be excluded when the church meets.
Children need Godly examples of how to worship.
If children never see adults in the main service worshiping, they won't know how to worship or what is expected of them.
Children need to feel like they are a part of the church community.
If children are always separated from the body of Christ, they will never feel like they are a part of the church community. And the members of the church will never get to know the children and be an example to them.
Children who don't feel like a part of the church community will leave church when they are older.
Imagine the culture shock of a child who has been in church all of his life but has never been in the main service. He has played games every Sunday, sang active songs, and had every message or Bible story illustrated with a skit, object lesson, or interactive device. Suddenly the child turns 10, or 12, or in some cases, 18 years old. He has graduated to big church. The music is strange. There are no games, skits, or illustrations, only some person he's never met standing up front and talking. He doesn't know any of the people. Get the picture? That's what happens to a child who is never in the main service. Within a few months, maybe even a few weeks, he decides he doesn't want to be there. If his parents make him stay, he'll leave as soon as he turns 18. If not, he will leave sooner. He may look for a church that entertains him and if he doesn't find one, he'll drop out of church. This may be why so many young people are no longer attending church. They never were a part of the church.
Why are we doing this? Perhaps it is as simple or complicated as this:
Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."
~Matthew 19: 14
Brothers and Sisters, this is about growing disciples. This is about passing on an UNSINKABLE FAITH to the next generation. This is the WORK of the church... and it is a WORK in progress. Thank you for your understanding and your patience as we continue to learn to be the body of Christ together.
Together in UNSINKABLE FAITH!
