Petroleum Reduction Mandate Taken out of "Job killer" Bill
|
Thearbitrary and unrealistic mandate for the state to reduce petroleum use by 50% within fifteen years, without regard to the impact on individuals, jobs and the economy has been amended out of
SB 350. This is a huge victory for the Torrance business community as the costs of a dramatic fuel reduction mandate would have been regressively shouldered by middle-class consumers and businesses. The provision did not entail an actual plan for how the state could achieve such a mark but instead, empowered the California Air Resources Board (CARB), an unelected body, as the end-all, be-all planning guide into what could have been an economically volatile future.
TACC President and CEO Donna Duperron provides this statement on the bill, "The Torrance Chamber is certainly supportive of environmental stewardship, but SB 350's fuel reduction mandate failed to produce a pragmatic solution to actually achieve the ambitious mark it set forth. California has already implemented unprecedented climate change policies, which have yet to be fully carried out and adequately assessed for effectiveness."
TACC has been a strong advocate against SB 350 and testified against the bill in Sacramento just this past July. Thank you to all TACC members who participated in SB 350 advocacy efforts!
