Waste Matters             December 2015
Beacon School Wins Recycling Challenge!
From Monday, November 30 through December 18th, 6 schools in the Athens area competed to see who could recycle the most per student in the first ever Athens School Recycling Challenge--co-hosted by the Athens Hocking Recycling Center and Rural Action.

Together, East, West, Morrison, The Plains, Athens Middle School, Athens High School and Beacon School kept over 6,000 pounds of recycling out of the landfill!! That in itself is a huge win for all involved.

The winner of this year's Athens School Recycling Challenge was BEACON SCHOOL!   Second place this year went to WEST ELEMENTARY!  Beacon School received a trophy made out of scrap metal by students from Tri-County Career Center which is already proudly displayed in their trophy case.  And, both schools were treated to a healthy dessert bar featuring local food products from Rural Action's Farm to School Program including: fresh berries from the Chesterhill Produce Auction that were processed by students in Hocking College's Culinary Arts program, yogurt from Snowville Creamery and granola from Crumbs Bakery.
Athens Food Rescue Launches to Bring Food to Those in Need
At the end of every closing shift, many restaurants throw all of the uneaten food into the dumpster.  Seeing the potential to feed the hungry with the perfectly good food that has been going to waste, Athens resident Teresa Curtiss took the initiative to try to solve both the problem of food waste and hunger simultaneously.

Athens Food Rescue (AFR) is a new non-profit operating in Athens County that picks up excess food from restaurants, and redistributes it to local charities to feed those in need.  Achieving their non-profit status this past July, AFR has already rescued over 5,000 lbs of food.

Teresa Curtiss worked closely together with AFR Board Vice Chair Adele Hanson, Treasurer Susan Jago, and Secretary Nanda Filkin, as well as Athens Hocking Zero Waste Action Plan partner, John Glazer to establish their non-profit status which brings credibility to their organization, particularly when gaining new donors.  AFR primarily relies on grant funding, charitable donations, and food from restaurants and farms.

With the help of only a handful of volunteers, food is collected and then redistributed to many different charities in Athens County such as Timothy House, UCM, and My Sister's Place  According to Teresa, these organizations are at the heart of her work, "so that I could help reduce the amount of food going to waste, but more importantly, to put food on the plates of those in need."   Her work also tackles action steps included in the Athens Hocking Zero Waste Action Plan, which includes reducing organics entering the landfill.

Zero Waste Champ: Sara Bryant
After spending only a short while in Cool Digs, located in Athens, Ohio, it's immediately clear they are committed to sustainability in every facet of their business.   Cool Digs has been in business for the past three years, and environmentally conscious business practices have been made a priority from the very beginning.  Owner Sara Bryant doesn't throw things away without a good reason, and they make a great effort to prioritize stocking many products made locally and from recycled materials.

Because of her dedication to sustainability, Sara reached out to Rural Action to participate in our Zero Waste Pledge project.  Our Zero Waste team conducted a waste stream assessment only to find that they throw away so little that the largest contributor to the landfill was candy wrappers.  Waste assessments, the first step of the Pledge project, are our way of assisting and educating local businesses to minimize the amount of recyclable and compostable materials that are being thrown away.. Rural Action was able to help Sara reduce the cost and volume of her trash contract because the store was so successful with recycling.

Sara Bryant's selfless commitment to sustainable practices is making a difference in the community and it reflects in her business, as she mentions, "I think customers really appreciate that we take their bags and jugs to reuse or recycle for them."  Cool Digs makes an effort to involve the community and goes the extra mile in reducing the impact their business has on the environment, and for that reason we are proud to call Sara Bryant December's Zero Waste Champion.

Zero Waste Celebration Recap
On October 10th, Rural Action and our partners joined together to celebrate all the progress that has been made since the creation of the Athens Hocking Zero Waste Action Plan in 2013. Over 25 significant steps have been taken to further the completion of the Action Plan.

Gathered at Robbin's Crossing in Nelsonville, attendees were treated to dinner and invited to join in engaging discussion with one another on a multitude of different topics and pervasive issues affecting Athens and Hocking Counties.

From illegal dumping and burning to business and economic development, our friends and partners contributed many ideas, which will be incorporated into an updated version of the Plan. Links to the opening speech, the panel response, and all our accomplishments can be found here.
Partner Feature: Ohio U. Reaches Zero Waste Game Day
On Oct. 17, Ohio University competed against colleges and universities across the nation in the 2015 GameDay Recycling Challenge, a waste reduction and recycling competition. More than 22,000 football game attendees recycled and composted 7,225 pounds of materials for a 96 percent diversion rate from landfills. That's almost a third of the weight of the entire Bobcat football team.

Out of all the waste generated at Peden Stadium and the related tailgates from the Bobcat football game against Western Michigan, 26 percent was composted, 70 percent was recycled or donated for reuse and only four percent went to the landfill. Those statistics will be compared against the waste measured at other participating schools, including Kent State University, University of Akron and University of Toledo.
