AERO Conference 2016 Call for Proposals!
We're excited to announce the AERO Conference 2016 call for proposals. Please submit your proposal for a workshop, presentation or event on the form linked here. We've already received many impressive inquiries about presentations at the Portland August 4-8 event. And we've already received many registrations. We expect the conference to be full well before it opens. You can still register for the whole conference at $225. Rooms at the Holiday Inn Portland Airport are at a special conference rate. Reserve them now.

  NYSAPE Survey Shows New Yorkers Overwhelmingly Reject Common Core
In response to NYS Education Department's AimHighNY survey on the Common Core that many parents and teachers found excessively complex and not open to general comments, New York State Allies for Public Education created a user-friendly survey and posted it online between November 23 and November 30. Close to 12,000 New Yorkers filled out our survey in just a week's time.  According to Commissioner Elia, only 5500 completed NYSED survey in three weeks' time.  Governor's Common Core task force has received 1,798 submissions since December 2, according to Politico.

What Happens When Students Create Their Own Curriculum?

Nothing in particular stands out about the two adjoining rooms at South Burlington High School, one littered with desks, the other lined with simple grey cubicles. Yet the 30 students working inside are taking part in a uniquely personalized curriculum unlike anything their peers-or most U.S. high-school students-ever get to experience.

Big Picture, a program with a chapter at South Burlington, bucks the traditional model of high-school learning. There are no tests, no grades, and, for some students, no traditional classes to sit through.

5 Ways to Make Your Classroom Student-Centered

What interests you? Sports? Historical novels? Cars? Finding crafty ideas on Pinterest? For adults, making choices is the norm. We're motivated by stimuli that we value, by our passions. If ideas hold no personal interest for us, we often quit, unless a relationship or reward is involved.

Our students aren't so different. Expert teachers know how to give students choice and voice, finding ways to design learning experiences that tap into what students value. This isn't always easy, especially if our preparation experiences didn't frame learning this way. Here are five questions that can help us develop and refine the teacher strengths needed for creating a student-centered classroom. Use them to start the new year off right!
