Chanukah
I just received a set of beautiful art posters that will soon be hanging in my office. Each is an artistic interpretation of a saying from a famous Jewish personality. My favorite of the set includes a compelling quotation by Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, "A Jew is asked to take a leap of action rather than a leap of faith." The story of Chanukah certainly illustrates that idea. Armed with both faith and fearlessness, the Maccabees took a stand against spiritual annihilation and acted to preserve the Jewish way of life threatened both by the Greeks themselves and the Hellenist followers of Greek mores. They leapt into action to ensure that Judaism and Jewish values survived untainted and that Jewish ritual could be restored in its full glory.
Within Judaism, there are numerous (perhaps even 613) ways to leap into action. Ritual serves as one form of action and interpersonal interactions are another form. At Akiba we provide our students with myriad hands-on experiences to teach that Judaism depends on active engagement and physical manifestations of our commitment to our heritage and to the Torah. We make "Judaism" an action verb, in both the religious and social realms, so our children are ready to take magnificent leaps into their Jewish lives.
Shabbat Shalom and Happy Chanukkah!

LATKES, LATKES EVERYWHERE
Morah Sabo, Mrs. Robinson, Neriya, and Tal created quite a hands on experience for our students on Monday. The students got down and dirty by peeling, grating, mixing, and stiring all the ingredients necessary to make latkes. Then last step was for Mr. Rov and Morah Fartook to fry each of these delicious latkes for our students to eat.

JFS THE REAL WINNER!
What an AMAZING community initiative! Thank you Akiba families for collecting 1149 food items to donate to JFS's food bank. With Torah Day School (over 700 items) and Levine (796 items), the combined total is well over 2000 food items! We hope that this will keep JFS Food Pantry stocked for weeks to come!

JEWISH READING FAIR CONNECTS US TO OUR PAST
Second graders read All of a Kind Family by Sydney Taylor, then prepared several projects based on the book. Ella, one of the sisters in the book, sings "Oyfn Pripetchik" so all of the second graders, for one of the projects, learned and performed the song in Yiddish. We recorded this and included it with our Jewish Reading Fair exhibit in the Administration Building Lobby.

B'NOT SHERUT ENTERTAIN US
The B'not Sherut entertained us this week with a skit called Chana Zelda during our Lower School morning assembly. Chana Zelda wanted to make latkes, but she kept forgetting ingredients. So, Rabbi Kalman kept going to the store to buy the missing ingredients. And in the end, she does not have the energy to make the latkes, so Rabbi Kalman makes the latkes for them.
