Preparing for the Next Stage of Growth

Dynamic and thoughtful leadership is essential to any organization's health.  In every new project we undertake, we make a point to engage with the project leaders from the start to better understand their visio n and goals.  As Orr Associates, Inc. (OAI) approaches its 25th anniversary, we are evaluating our own leadership to ensure we can best help our clients thrive in 2016 and beyond.

It is with great pleasure, then, that I announce the appointment of John L. Lehr as the new President of OAI.  John joins the firm's Executive Committee, working alongside Carol Orr and me to lead efforts to continue OAI's growth as a leading resource to nonprofit organizations regionally and nationally.  You can read more about John's background, and the skills and experience he brings to OAI below

As always, I welcome the opportunity to talk to you about how OAI can help your nonprofit with critical decisions related to leadership, strategy, staffing and board development.  In this newsletter, you can read our latest thinking on how to fill key executive positions, and how to engage with the next generation of leaders to invigorate and energize your organization.  Please contact me to discuss these topics, or any other challenges your nonprofit is facing.

More About John Lehr... John

Since joining OAI as a Managing Director in January 2015, John has worked with OAI's clients on a broad range of issues from organizational strategy, to Board development and recruitment, to fundraising assessment, planning and implementation.  He has also worked to expand OAI's service line offerings, most notably developing a major giving model for nonprofits seeking to diversify revenue from high net worth donors.

John brings more than twenty years of fundraising and nonprofit management experience to OAI, having served previously as CEO of two national organizations, Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) and CureSearch for Children's Cancer. In both instances, John led the organizations through periods of transition, refocusing missions, streamlining operations and significantly increasing fundraising revenue.  Prior to that, John led the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's $175 million "Milestones to a Cure" Campaign which helped accelerate critical cystic fibrosis research. With his new role as President, John's broad and deep experience will help us better serve OAI's clients, and help you meet your mission objectives.

John is a graduate of Villanova University, where he earned Bachelor's and Master's degrees in History.  After college, he served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Sri Lanka.  John lives in Washington DC, and is the proud father of a 9-year old daughter.  You can read more about John here.  To send him an email, please click here.

What, Your Development Director Quit Again?development

Record levels of turnover in the Development Director role carry heavy costs for nonprofits.  Beyond the dollar costs of hiring, and the time spent recruiting and onboarding new talent, churn in this key role can have a significant impact on fundraising success.  In the September 1, 2015 issue of Inside Philanthropy, OAI's Managing Partner, Steve Orr talks about the direct and indirect costs and some possible solutions to the problem of churn.  To read the full article, please click here.
