"Welcome" by Malcolm Wilson
September Featured Artist:

MALCOLM WILSON
"Now and Then"

September 1-October 3

As a teenager in England I began sketching the countryside and drawing the occasional portrait. Soon the demands of career and family left little time for art but I still had the chance to attend evening classes in Boston and Walnut Creek in pottery making, clay modelling, etching and drawing.  When I retired I was finally able to devote time to oil painting. I have studied portrait painting in several workshops given by Craig Nelson, participated in a landscape workshop by Richard McDaniel and painted still life with Roberta Remy. I have also enjoyed a great many opportunities to paint landscapes and people with friends at NVAL.
My paintings have been shown at various locations in the Redding area and are held in the collections of a number of people both locally and elsewhere.
Looking back over the work of the past 50 years I realize that my greatest interest has been in people - perhaps reflecting my career - and I now have a number of clay figures, drawings and paintings which reflect changes in the same people over many years as well as portraits of others known only recently.
Lately I have been unable to travel far and my landscapes have been mainly local. Fortunately we live in a beautiful area of the country and there is much well worth painting close at hand.

Paul (aka Palul) Rideout and his Turtle Bay Pyramids
You most likely have seen the two 7 foot pyramids in the McConnell Arboretum and Gardens. The creator, Palul, will give a talk and powerpoint presentation explaining how these came to be. He will explain how he got his inspiration along with the actual process of creating and installing the pyramids.

ABOUT Palul:

Palul PALUL Rideout migrated from the East Coast with a science degree (Zoology/Chemistry) from the University of Rhode Island. After the turbulent years of the sixties (see his full-length memoir, Vision-Quest: A Saga of the Sixties ), wherein he crossed the continent three times, working in seven different laboratories and creating art between lab jobs, he eventually settled in Northern California.

His uncompromising desire to create lasting art led him into a parallel career as a ceramic artist. He is considered a Master Ceramic Artist and taught ceramics for Shasta College for twenty-six years before retiring in 2012. He has simultaneously worked as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (now retired), eventually becoming a Lab Computer System Manager linking three hospitals in the area.

Palul and his wife, Allison, along with their fifteen pound cat, Spaz, maintain a home and ceramics studio in a quiet Redding neighborhood. Besides clay work, his interests include writing, art, chemistry, psychology, Zen and related philosophies, gardening and cooking.

DENISE GRANGER KERBS
& DEBBIE ANDREWS:

Denise Granger Kerbs

"Paying Tribute to the Intricacies of God's Creations"
I began creating art when I was 12 years old as an assignment for my seventh grade art class. My parents were so encouraging as they looked at my drawing and said, "Wow, you must be an artist!" At that moment I thought, "Oh, O.K. maybe I am!" So I began drawing everything I could see, painting with whatever mediums we had and I never stopped. My passion grew with every piece of art I created.
I am the sixth of seven children and I have realized over the years that it is because of my very larger-than-life family that I am drawn to the details in every subject just as I was with each of them. I found that it was not enough to only see the obvious, but rather every nuance of each sibling and that has translated into my art. For me, it is there that my search for truth lies. With the added support of my late-husband, Mark Granger, husband Scott Kerbs, and family, I have been able to continue with my artistic journey. Art has been my refuge and my gift.
I was self taught until I went to college in 2004 and graduated from Chico State in 2007. There, I earned a BA in Art at the age of 47 and received my CA Teaching Credential in Art one year later. I love teaching art and I am finding myself at home teaching workshops to fellow artists. The beauty of it is that I am teacher and student because every artist from beginner to professional has their own unique perspective and aesthetic and I find myself inspired by the way art moves so uniquely in each of us!
I am compelled to enhance and elevate the smallest of elements to capture the life and fervor of my subjects. Although, I may not always be successful in my attempt at such a lofty goal, it is that aspiration that drives me. I do not seek to mirror God's creations but merely pay homage to this wonderful gift we call life.

Debbie Andrews

Debbie Andrews has lived in Redding, CA for over thirty years. She has
been married to her husband Mike for twenty-eight years and they have two sons, Bryce 21 and Tristan 20.
She has been painting consistently since 2009. She took watercolor classes at Shasta College, but her boys were young and they took priority. She says time stands still while painting and is a wonderful mystery, but the world doesn't wait.
Debbie has taken part in many workshops and had instruction from artist's such as Ken Hosmer, Jeannie Vodden, Fealing Lin, Vinita Pappas and many others. She says, "Every time I take a workshop, I learn something valuable; each Artist has a different technique or creative idea to share."
She looks for subjects that tell a story and have a unique composition. Her paintings are rich with color, movement, and emotion. When painting a non representational art piece, she always begins with color choices and placement. Her environment is equally as rich with beautiful music and she loses herself in the painting.
Debbie feels art is a gift from God. She knows she is blessed to have a way to express herself creatively and is grateful for the special people in her life who have been supportive and inspirational.
She passes on this advice:
"Don't be afraid to try something new and stop telling yourself that you can't or that you aren't gifted. You will be surprised....open the gift!"

Both Shows run October 6-31.

OCTOBER GENERAL MEETING/PRESENTATION
NEW DATE AND LOCATION!
**** SUNDAY , October 25, at 3 P.M.****
Speaker will be multi-faceted artist  Don Linn.
The  the  meeting will be held at his studio/workshop at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday afternoon rather than our regular 7 P.M. meeting time at NVAL, in order to be able to see his sculptures, many of which are outdoors.  See directions below.

Don lives in Redding with his wife, Donna.  They celebrated their 50th anniversary this year.
He has loved working with his hands since he was a child.
Typical of many youngsters he began his creative journey in school shop classes where he developed an interest in woodworking through making class projects.
After college and raising two children he found a little more time to explore woodworking through wood carving.  Among other projects he has carved 3 full sized carousel animals which are on display in his house.  He continues carving today with several projects as work in progress.
After a corporate down sizing and finding that he had to reinvent himself at the age of 48 he started a small furniture repair and upholstery business.  This led to also starting a machine quilting business to supplement his income.  Specializing in very intricate heirloom quilting he quickly found that he had more business than he could handle.  Along with that he found that quilters were interested in his story of a man being involved in an art medium that was typically dominated by women.  To satisfy ladies curiosity he began going on the lecture circuit to tell his story.  About the same time he began designing his own quilt patterns and teaching classes on how to make his quilts.
There was so much interest in his techniques that he decided to submit a book proposal.  Much to his surprise his submittal was accepted and he ended up having 3 books published.
Never being one to sit still Don took an Art Welding class at Shasta College as a way of having another mountain to climb.  His love now is doing welded metal sculptures out of new and repurposed metals.  Some of his sculptures include his interpretation of the Statue of Liberty, a full sized bald eagle and a large sea serpent.
Don hopes you will come to his house on the 25th of October to see some of his work.

Directions to 1400 Whitewater Circle :
Go north on Quartz Hill Road (past the intersection at the Lake Redding Golf Course) to River Ridge Drive and turn left on River Ridge. His house is at the corner of River Ridge and Whitewater Circle, which is the second street on the right off River Ridge.
