GCSS Inclement Weather Procedures
GCSS schools and facilities may close in the event of hazardous weather or other emergencies which present threats to the safety of students, staff, or school property. School closings and delays are determined by the Emergency Weather Review Team (consisting of the Superintendent, Transportation Director, and Maintenance Director) after consulting with local public safety officials, the Georgia Emergency Management Agency, Hall County School System, and Gainesville City School System officials. Factors that may determine school closings or delays include hazardous road conditions, snow or ice accumulation, flooding, unfavorable weather conditions, unfavorable facility conditions (loss of power or heat), harsh temperature, and extreme wind chill factor.
In the event of inclement weather, the Emergency Weather Review Team will travel on designated routes and assess road conditions to determine if roads are conducive for safe bus travel. The team will then decide whether to proceed with school closing or delay with regard to the safety of students and employees.
Once a decision is determined, the school system will immediately notify local media outlets. In addition, announcements will be made via the district website, Alert Solutions messaging system, GCSS Mobile App, Twitter, and the district's e-newsletter.
If inclement weather occurs during the day and a decision is made for early dismissal, announcements will be made through local media outlets, Alert Solutions messaging system, GCSS Mobile App, and the district's website prior to dismissal.

Student Make-Up Day - February 15, 2016
Monday, February 15, 2016 will be a student make-up day, and students should report to school. The district had implemented this date within the 2015-2016 school calendar to be utilized in case of inclement weather.

Current Plans for Capital Outlay Projects
The Gainesville City School System is excited to announce plans to begin capital outlay projects that were identified in the ESPLOST V referendum.
The architects are busy developing the plans for the school that will be built in the Mundy Mill subdivision. The Georgia Department of Education should approve the plans in March 2016. GCSS will break ground once the plans are approved. The anticipated opening of the school is fall of 2017.

Schools Celebrate 100th Day of School

| Students and teachers celebrate 100th day of school |
There was something special about Tuesday, January 19 that caused some of our schools to celebrate. Actually, this date marked the 100th day of the school year!
Enota's staff and students dressed as if they were 100 years old to celebrate the 100th day of school. Wigs, canes, and pearls were prominent props for teachers. Students enjoyed painting their hair grey. It was a fun way to build excitement for being at school while not interfering with valuable instructional time.
Meanwhile, students at New Holland, from Pre-K to 5th grade, celebrated with many fun-filled activities. Teachers incorporated the number 100 into their classroom in a variety of ways. Students dressed up as 100 year olds, made snacks that involved counting to 100, and participated in other activities that celebrated 100 days!
Teachers and students showed that the 100th day of school is more than just a milestone worth noting - it's also the perfect time to have fun with the number 100.

GHS Junior Elected as State Student Officer

GHS junior Ally Kimpling was recently elected as a 2016-2017 State Student Officer for Georgia Thespians. Ally was among over 20 candidates running for office and was elected as one of seven state student officers to serve for the 2016-2017 school year. She follows in the footsteps of her mentor Carlee Cosper, current GHS Thespian Troupe President and 2015-2016 State Student Officer.
When asked about her feelings on being elected as a state officer, Ally replied, " I am both excited and nervous. I am excited about representing my school, and I am nervous about my new responsibilites." Of course, she is ready for the challenge and will be prepared to tackle her new role due to her years of experience in theater.
Ally has been involved in theatre at GHS since taking 8th grade Theatre Arts/Fundamental I for high school credit. She immediately showed talent, passion, and commitment in her daily work as well as in her relationship with others. Even then, she led by example by always being prepared and positive in her daily communication with others.
Last year, Ally served as a GHS Thespian Troupe 2445 representative. She also served as historian and was responsible for creating a scrapbook for state competition. Because of Ally's impeccable work with this project, GHS Thespian Troupe will be recognized at the State Thespian Conference in February as a Gold Honor Troupe based on inclusions in the scrapbook produced by Ally.
"Ally is an exceptional individual who has strong work ethics and character," stated GHS theatre director Pam Ware. "She is a leader by example and illustrates a positive spirit that we should all strive to display."

GHS Teacher Honored for Years of Service

GHS teacher Wyoma Newman was recently honored on January 13 at a special reception at Gainesville High School honoring her for 42 years of service in education. Mrs. Newman was surrounded by family, friends, colleagues, and former students who were excited to be a part of the retirement celebration and eager to send their well-wishes as she embarks on a new journey.
Mrs. Newman began teaching in 1973 as a Language Arts teacher at Gainesville Junior High School during the time when the ninth grade was separated from the high school. She was hired by former GHS principal Curtis Segars when the ninth grade was relocated to be a part of GHS, and she remained a part of the high school since then. Over the years, Mrs. Newman has taught several courses which include American Literature, AP English Literature and Composition, and ESOL English. In 2007, she retired from teaching full time; however, in 2008 she returned back to GHS to teach part-time.
Mrs. Newman states, "Teaching with the English department has been a wonderful experience, and I will miss my colleagues and students but intend to remain in touch with everyone." She adds, "After all, once a Red Elephant, always a Red Elephant!"

The Gainesville City Board of Education held its regular meeting on January 19 at the School Board Office. Special guests recognized were Gainesville Exploration Academy (Highest Student Attendance), Fair Street IB World School (Highest Employee Attendance), Centennial School Store Student Leaders and parent sponsor Samantha Dunagan, Centennial Robotics Team and Coaches Havilyn Towns and Leslie Williams, Kelly Kennedy (Faculty on Fire Award Recipient), Centennial PTA, LifeSavers and Good Samaritans (Tristan Rettiger, Adam Miller, Jeremy Kemp, and special guest Sharon Rucker), Wyoma Newman (GCSS Retiree - 42 Years of Service), Caleigh Casper (Middle School Girls Cross Country Champion), GMS Boys and JV Boys Cross Country Team and Coaches Bill Barrett and LeeAnn Pittman (Middle School State Championship - Fourth & Second Place) . The Board reviewed and approved agenda items submitted by district personnel.
