Better living through biking

Allow us to preach to the choir for the moment: Biking is great. So how about getting more people on bikes and turning your own bike trips into prizes? With the return of bike-friendly weather, we're kicking off both our new volunteer program and the Boulder B-cycle team for the National Bike Challenge. And of course, monthly ridership contests are back in session. Read on for everything you need to know.

Volunteer for your favorite Boulder-based nonprofit bike share program!

Many of you have been asking about how you can chip in to our nonprofit's efforts to get more people out of cars and onto bikes. Good news! We've put together a volunteer program and we need your help.

If you're interested in helping out at events, assisting new riders at stations, or just chipping in to help our operations run more smoothly, take a look at our volunteer opportunities here.

Once you've found an opportunity that's right for you, get in touch with our volunteer coordinator,  Erica, to set up your training and volunteer hours.

Volunteer perks include a sweet T-shirt and Polar Bottle, and you can even earn a free annual pass! We look forward to working with you.

Braving the Bolder Boulder

It's that time of year again: Boulder's most exciting, invigorating, street-clogging event is here. On Monday, May 25th, Boulder will swell up like a frightened fugu to many times its normal size as runners from all over the globe arrive for America's All-Time Best 10K™, The Bolder Boulder.

For the first time, we now have stations at both the start and finish line, so we hope that whether you're a spectator or just trying to get around amid the madness, you'll consider B-cycle as a transportation option on the day of the race.

We'll be on-hand that day to balance the system and address customer needs as best we're able. As a heads-up, past experience has taught us a few lessons:

  1. The high volume of spectators with mobile devices can create a heavy load on the cell networks that our stations use to connect to our database. This means that sometimes stations may be unavailable for use for brief periods.
  2. Road closures can make balancing difficult, so we may not be able to address full or empty stations as quickly as we'd like.
  3. Visitors to Boulder can get excited and fail to read the instructions on kiosks, keeping bikes out for long periods of time. If you see this happen, we'd appreciate your help in keeping our visitors informed!
We appreciate your patience as we work through these operational challenges. As always, keep an eye on the B-cycle Now app for up-to-date station and bike availability, and give us a call at 303-532-4412 with any questions.

Website updates

As you may have already noticed, we recently transitioned over to a new website platform. This new platform includes all of the features of our old website, plus a few important updates:
  • Mobile-friendly adaptive browsing
  • Improved resources for visitors
  • Updated blog platform
  • Improved user interface and customization options
If you haven't already, take a moment to poke around the new BoulderBcycle.org, and as always, let us know if you have any questions.

May Ridership Contest

Treat yourself to a Boulder staycation! Our next ridership contest begins May 1st, and the prize is a complementary night's stay at the newly-opened Hyatt Place Boulder/Pearl Street, just across Pearl from our Boulder Junction South station. Enjoy a room with a 42-inch HDTV, free wi-fi and sectional sofa, along with a free breakfast, indoor pool and 24/7 workout facilities.

This ridership contest is going to work a bit differently:

  • The contest runs from Friday, May 1st to Sunday, May 31st
  • Each trip taken on a Hyatt Place branded bike gets you one entry into the drawing
    • There are 20 of these bikes in the system (pictured above)
  • At the end of the month, we'll tally up the results and pick a winner
Happy riding!

Join us for the National Bike Challenge!

May 1st marks the beginning of the National Bike Challeng e, a program of PeopleForBikes. The National Bike Challenge is a nationwide event designed to highlight the benefits of biking by challenging cyclists to hop on bikes and log miles spent riding for fun, to work or any other reason.

Participants can earn badges and win prizes for miles logged. The challenge runs from May 1st to September 30th. Click here to learn more and sign up.

If you'd like to join up with other Boulder B-cycle riders or see how your trips stack up compared to other bike share programs, you can join our team and log your miles for Boulder B-cycle here. Whether you log your miles on a B-cycle or your own personal bike, we'll be giving out our own prizes for team members who log the most miles.

Sponsor Spotlight:

This month, we'd like to recognize one of our new sponsors, Hyatt Place Boulder/Pearl Street, for their recent support of Boulder B-cycle. Hyatt Place is Boulder's newest hotel, recently opened in the new Depot Square at Boulder Junction development.

In addition to their financial contribution to our program, Hyatt place is sponsoring May's ridership contest with a free night's stay in their hotel!

Thanks for becoming a sponsor, Hyatt Place!
