MMA Astronomy Director Photographs Mauna Kea Observatories In HawaiiDr. Michael West, Director of Astronomy, recently spent nine days and nights on the summit of Mauna Kea in Hawaii, home to the world's most powerful collection of telescopes. There he photographed the observatories and the mountain's unique landscape for his new book, 50 Years of Astronomy on Mauna Kea, which he has been asked to write by the observatories and University of Hawaii Press. His previous book, A Gentle Rain of Starlight: The Story of Astronomy on Mauna Kea, sold more than 7,000 copies. The new book will be published in 2015. While there, West also gave an invited public lecture at the University of Hawaii titled "Nantucket Nights: Astronomy Thirty Miles Out to Sea," which told of Maria Mitchell's legacy as America's first woman astronomer, the lost astronomical knowledge of the island's indigenous Wampanoag people, and whether whales can see the stars. The talk will be repeated here in Nantucket sometime this summer, date to be determined.
