MPH TODAY  April 2015

National Public Health Week

National Public Health week is the first full week of April every year . This year the Class of 2015 had nearly 25 vendors come to the networking fair, "Networking with Those in the Know."  There was a panel discussion regarding marketing your skills to the public health workforce that directly followed the networking fair. Many thanks to those vendors and panelist who came out to support and engage the students.

Class of 2015 also helped out with the Southeastern Food Bank, helped in the Judeo Christian Food Kitchen, created a team for the Purple Stride 5K, helped celebrate National Public Health Week with Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, and also went into Ghent Elementary for a Health Fair!

Here is what Ghent Elementary had to say:

"Thank you so much for sending your health students to Ghent School again this year to present their health fair. My students and I appreciate them sharing their  enthusiasm and knowledge with us. What a fun, dedicated group of students! It was exciting to see my students so engaged and interested in each group's presentation.

Karis had everyone engaged with her Zumba in the last 20 or so minutes. Everyone was having such a good time exercising and sweating. So many students said they WOULD NOT or DID NOT want to dance, and they danced the whole time.

We look forward to seeing your students again next year."

Student Presentations

Sara Wood, Alicia Feliciano, Jasmine Green, and Marquise Lawrence
When Sara Wood was asked what the student presentation was about, this was her response:  "Old Dominion University and Eastern Virginia Medical School received a Faculty Service Learning Grant to create an inter-professional team consisting of students from Public Health, Environmental Sciences, Nursing, and Dental Hygiene programs as well as faculty to promote dental health in prenatal care, infants, and toddlers. Students were broken up into four groups to focus their patient education presentations according to age-specific learning objectives and one summary session. The collaborative effort will culminate in a presentation at the Virginia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics professional conference that will provide tools to healthcare providers to effectively communicate oral health deliverables to diverse patient populations."
