32nd Ward May 22nd, 2015

Chicago's Memorial Day parade sets off tomorrow at noon, after a memorial service in the Daley Center Plaza at 11 a.m. Memorial Day is a day for remembrance of those who have died in service to our country. Thank you to all veterans who have served and to those who serve our country each day.

Set a reminder on your calendar for the annual city sticker sale taking place on June 11th- but this is only for those with stickers expiring this June or July. More details are listed below.

The CTA and CDOT are continuing the reconstruction of many of our CTA bus stop locations. These new pads are made of concrete and will last much longer than the typical asphalt paving. Please be aware of the additional intersection construction and workers.

The Damen, Elston, Fullerton intersection improvement is underway and will see major construction starting this June. Please be aware that some traffic delays will exist as crews begin work in the different intersections.

Have a nice weekend,
Scott Waguespack

Neighborhood Block Parties
The summer season is upon us and many of you are making plans to enjoy the beautiful weather.  Organizing a neighborhood block party is a great way to socialize with family, neighbors and friends. To ensure that your block party is well organized, there are a few key issues that you should consider while planning and having your block party.  Please read the block party rules below. We have barricades at the ward office that can be reserved if enough are available. There is also a small block party popcorn machine that is available. Please fill out a city application in order for us to notify the City of the block closure.

The Bloomingdale Trail/606 weekly update  - OPENING OF THE TRAIL TAKES PLACE SATURDAY, JUNE 6th!

The Bloomingdale Trail-606 grand opening is on June 6th starting early in the morning with a kickoff at 8 a.m., a bike ride at 9 a.m. and all entry and parks opening at 10 a.m. More details to come. Bring your family to the opening!

My office will be watching the traffic created by the opening of the 606 and reviewing parking issues in the weeks and months following the opening. We will take input and make recommendations regarding parking to the neighbors along the trail after we assess the overall impact.

Construction is in full swing as we get closer to the June 6 th  opening. Expect frequent closures of parts of Bloomingdale Avenue to facilitate soil placement, deliveries to the trail top, and other construction-related items. Local detours will be provided, and some work and closures may go into evening or weekend hours.

Happening now:

  • Landscaping is in progress. Trees and shrubs are mostly in place between Marshfield and Central Park, with cover crops are going in where planting will continue over the summer as materials become available. Visit our Facebookand Twitter pages for photos like these.
  • Soil is going in Walsh Park, around the Damen Arts Plaza, and at some street-level entrances for parks.
  • Light poles are going in at park and trail access points. Poles for security cameras (no blue lights) are going in at various points along the trail.
  • Running track surface work is ongoing, largely in the center section of the Bloomingdale Trail.
  • At Milwaukee/Leavitt: Park grading is occurring on the Park 567 side. Complete center pier removal and repaving will happen soon.
  • At the Observatory/Ridgeway, crews are finalizing the paving for the spiral, and crews are working on the path down into the Ridgeway cul-de-sac.
  • Work on the nature trails (at Marshfield/Paulina, Kimball, Kimball/St. Louis, and Monticello/Central Park) is ongoing. Benches are being installed at various points along the trail and in the parks.
  • Crews are updating ground-level sidewalks and curb ramps to ADA standards. Work is complete to California, and is working east.
  • Planters at Western near ramps are being installed.
  • Water connections are happening for irrigation components. The third phase of irrigation system components installation also continues on the west end of the trail.
  • Viaduct lighting is wrapping up - crews are on the west end and expect to be finished lighting the undersides of all viaducts soon.
  • Installation of guardrail foundations and guardrails continues along the length of the Bloomingdale Trail.

Coming up:

  • Planting of annuals, bulbs, etc. will continue over the summer as materials become available.

Completed:

  • The Walsh Park sound wall is in place.
  • At Milwaukee/Leavitt: Boulders have been installed along the staircase side and the staircase has been poured. The bridge and arches have been painted.
  • Trees and shrubs are largely complete between Marshfield and Central Park. The poplar grove (between Kimball and Drake) was planted this week with 723 trees.
  • Path gaps have been poured; the Bloomingdale Trail concrete is complete between Marshfield and Ridgeway.
  • Preparation work for the running path installation is complete.
  • Crews have completed updating ground-level sidewalks and curb ramps to ADA standards from Sawyer to the western end of the project.

Neighbors will always find the coming week's construction schedule at The 606 website under News for Neighbors. Use the link at the website to join The 606 email list for construction and other updates. Call the 606 staff at (773) 661-9172 with construction-related questions or concerns.

Damen, Fullerton and Elston Intersection Construction
Major work on the Damen, Fullerton and Elston intersection makeover could start in June. While parts of the project such as the rerouting of Elston Avenue will be completed by next spring, construction will continue through the end of next year.

From late May through the end of July, traffic may be reduced to one lane in each direction on Damen and Fullerton, with more intermittent lane closures to occur through the end of 2016 as crews do underground work and other preparations for major reconstruction.

ComEd Reminders
ComEd reminds customers that higher temperatures can also lead to higher energy bills. ComEd customers can save energy and money this summer by following a few simple tips.
  • Turn Off Your Lights: Turn off your lights when you leave a room. Turning off just one 60-watt incandescent bulb that would otherwise burn eight hours a day can save you up to $23 per year.
  • Add 10 Degrees: Turn your thermostat up 10 degrees higher during the summer when you leave your home and before going to sleep. You could save up to 15% a year on cooling costs.
  • Close Your Blinds in the Summer: Cooling your home in the summer takes a lot of energy. You can help keep your home cool by limiting the amount of sunlight that enters by shutting the blinds during the day. If you close your blinds when the sun is up to prevent heat from entering your home, you can lower your cooling bills this summer.
  • Use a Ceiling Fan: This summer, instead of blasting the air conditioner (and blowing your electric bills through the roof), use a ceiling fan to keep cool. Using a ceiling fan may allow you to raise the thermostat setting about 4 degrees without impacting your comfort.
  • Adjust Your Water Heater: Set the temperature of your water heater to 120?F. Every 10 degrees you reduce your hot water temperature saves you, on average, 3% to 5% in energy costs.
