A Message from the Pastor

Dear Disciples of Jesus at American Lutheran,

This Sunday, May 24th, we observe the

Festival of Pentecost when God sent the Holy Spirit to empower the ministry of Jesus to continue through his followers.

Pentecost is both a day and a season, extending from The Day of Pentecost until Advent. It is a time for claiming the power of the Holy Spirit for our daily living to help us grow in faith, courage and love.

Wear red to worship as we boldly witness to the Spirit alive and well in our midst!

See you in church,

Pastor Gretchen

 Supporting Our Members

Longtime members Lynda and Denis Petitt's son-in-law, Chris Fording, passed away suddenly on April 29th, leaving his wife and three daughters (ages 2, 6 and 8) behind. A youcaring website has been started in order to receive donations that will go toward helping the family get through this very difficult time.

The site is at www.youcaring.com/chrisfording for those who wish to offer support.

The family also requests prayers at this time.

Roommate Wanted

My name is Caleb and I recently graduated from college and am moving to the LA area in mid-June. I'm searching for a church family to join and am also looking for a place to live at the moment. If anyone is seeking a roommate or is trying to rent out a room in their current residence I would be happy to speak with them and see if we could work something out. God Bless.

The Gift That Gives Back

When you make a gift to your church, you don't expect to receive anything in return.  However, when you set up a Charitable Gift Annuity through the ELCA Foundation, you receive favorable income from that gift for the rest of your life.  The amount of income you receive is based on your age.  The older you are, the more you receive.  An individual gift annuity begins at 4.4% at age 60, and goes to 9% at age 90.  A portion of the income you receive is tax free.  You also receive a tax deduction at the time you set up the gift.  Upon your death, the remainder of that gift then goes to the Lutheran entity of your choice.  A minimum of $10,000 is needed to set up a charitable gift annuity.  For further information, contact our congregation's gift planner,

Greg Shepherd at: 909-910-6823 or by email at: [email protected].

LGBTQ Pride Festivals - Volunteer Opportunities

LGBTQ  Pride Festivals are some of the most visible opportunities our congregations have to witness to the God who embraces each one of us and to proclaim that there are churches who are excited to receive the gifts of LGBTQ people. (Acronym lesson: L=Lesbian, G=Gay, B=Bisexual, T=Transgender, Q=Queer/Questioning)

SoCal Lutherans will be attending 3 Pride festivals this year:

- Long Beach Pride (May 16-17)
- Los Angeles Pride (June 12-14)
- Orange County Pride (August 1)

There will be several opportunities to volunteer at each one:

Staff the SoCal Lutherans Booth:
Shift length: 4 hours on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday during the morning, afternoon, or evening
What you'll get to do: Run a temporary tattoo parlor, take people's pictures against a whimsical backdrop, chat with people about faith (theirs and yours)
Best Part: Listening to people's stories while applying colorful rainbow tattoos!

March in the Pride Parade:
Shift length: Sunday morning, 5 hours, includes a 1.5 mile walking route.
What you'll get to do: Share in Holy Communion before the parade, then walk alongside cheering clergy and laity telling people of God's wide and welcoming embrace.
Best Part: Getting applauded for strutting your stuff and publicizing your church!

Decorate the Parade Floats/Make signs:
Shift Length: Variable, dates TBD
What you'll get to do: Tap into your artistic side to make signs, banners, and other decorations
Best Part: Getting creative with other fun Lutherans!

Why Volunteer at Pride?
1. It's a great opportunity to get energized in your faith
2. Pride is a fun, family-friendly event
3. You get a free t-shirt and tickets to the events!
4. There's a lot of positive energy and excitement - these are some of the biggest festivals in California!
5. It's a great chance to meet new people - both Lutherans and other festival attendees
6. You don't have to be gay to proclaim God's unending love to gay people! All people can be bearers of that good news!

This sounds great! How can I sign up?
