Congratulations to Courtney Kind, a freshman, who became the first HUHS Girls Cross Country runner to qualify for State in ten years!  Not only did she run a 50-second personal-best 5K time of 19 minutes and 20 seconds, she broke the HUHS School Record (set last year by Lisa LaBelle) for the distance by 40 seconds!

The 2015 WIAA State Cross Country Meet will be held, tomorrow, Saturday, October 31st in Wisconsin Rapids. Congratulations and Good Luck to Courtney! Click here to read this weeks Daily News article on Courtney.

Freshmen Cohort Prairie Project
The Frosh Cohort students spent a few weeks tackling the challenge of creating a virtual/interactive tour of the Central Middle School Prairie.  The Hartford Rotary Club has a sign out at the entrance of the prairie, but there are no handouts/fliers/maps/field guides for visitors to use to learn about organisms out in the prairie.  Seven groups of Cohort students used their ecology skills and technology skills to bring the experience into the 21st century.  Each team used GPS technology to create an interactive and informative map. Each team then identified species of the prairie and their interactions.  They studied populations and incorporated a wellness component for their Health class.

The final task was to present their interactive web page to a panel of community members including Rotarians, a local ecologist, and HUHS administrators.  The thing that struck everyone involved was just how extensive and impressive of a project these high school freshman were able to accomplish before they were done with the first quarter.  Each student should be very proud of their collective efforts.  As teachers, we cannot wait to see how high the students can keep pushing this bar.

Mantz Automation Visits English 10 Classes
Todd Doerfert and three of his coworkers from Mantz Automation in Hartford visited Katie Herrmann's English 10 classes to introduce students to career paths that he feels are largely overlooked by high school students and teachers: the trades and entrepreneurship.  He feels that while schools do a wonderful job of advocating  for the path to college, unfortunately, other avenues often get overlooked, and many young people instead end up misled and in debt after realizing that college may not be for them.  Todd also emphasized the  importance of students acquiring strong written and verbal communication skills, regardless of their post-secondary plans, and explained that work ethic and the ability to persuade others are essential skills for success in any career.  When asked whether the American Dream is still alive, and specifically, whether it's attainable here in Hartford, WI, Doerfert explained that it's "absolutely attainable, especially here in Hartford!"

Honored Speaker and Holocaust Survivor Raye David
On Tuesday, 10/27, Holocaust Survivor Raye David spoke to students from Minorities & Prejudice, Modern American History, and World Religions. As an active speaker from the Nathan & Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center in Milwaukee, Raye discussed her life as a young Jewish woman, growing up during the German occupation of Poland. At the age of 12, Raye was sent into the Jewish ghettos with her mother, which preceded several years spent between several concentration camps. Despite the horrific events she encountered as a young adult, she preached to the students a anti-hate message, which was well received by all in attendance.
