This year's
National Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15 - October 15. This annual observance celebrates the history, culture, and contributions of Americans with Hispanic ancestry.
Hispanic Quiz (Answers below)

What are some of the demographics of an elderly Hispanic person?
According to the
Administration on Aging there are almost 2.7 million Hispanic people who are 65
years or older. The rate of elderly Hispanic people will grow to over 17 million by the year 2050. So as this population grows, home health agencies need to understand this population better and address their distinctive needs.
The following facts are current demographics for Hispanic seniors. You will need to assess your particular communities for variances.
- Education level (2008):
- 46% are high school graduates and 9% have a bachelor's degree or higher
- General senior population are 77% and 21% respectively
- Living Arrangements (2007):
- 65% of older men live with a spouse
- 17% live with other relatives
- 3% live with non-relatives
- 26% live alone
- Older Hispanic women are more likely to live alone than older man
- Hispanic seniors are twice as likely to live with family than the general senior population
- Socioeconomics (2008):
- Median income of $33,418
- Non-Hispanic white seniors median income is $46,720
- 19% of Hispanic seniors are at poverty rate (twice that of non-Hispanic white seniors)
- Health Status (2008):
- 39% have received the pneumococcal vaccination
- Non-Hispanic white senior rate is 64%
- Non-Hispanic Black senior rate is 43%
- 11% are diagnosed with diabetes
- Non-Hispanic white senior rate is 6%
- Non-Hispanic Black senior rate is 11%
