News from the Counseling Department
|
Individual Freshmen Visits
Counselors will be visiting Freshmen Homerooms during the week of October 5 and October 12 to work on Academic and Career Plans, or ACPs. The goal is two-fold: to raise awareness for students regarding different careers available to them and facilitate exploration of how their interests match various career opportunities. Students will utilize Career Locker, formerly known as WISCareers, and complete an activity centered on career awareness and exploration. Counselors will help students interpret the activity results during Freshmen Conferences. These conferences are an opportunity for counselors to work on goal setting and begin the post-secondary planning process. Conferences will begin in mid-October and continue through the end of the semester. Conferences will be held during the school day. Parents are welcome to join their son or daughter in the conference, but attendance is not required. Students will receive 24-hour notice about the date and time of their conference.

PSAT/NMSQT for Juniors
College-bound juniors should consider taking the PSAT/NMSQT, which is the best preparation for the SAT and entry into the National Merit Scholarship Corporation programs. It is an optional exam that measures critical reading, mathematical reasoning, and writing skills that are important for success in college. Students do not have to recall facts from literature, history, science, or math formulas. This test measures reasoning and critical thinking skills.
All students who take the PSAT/NMSQT will receive an official score report. They will receive scores for critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills and will see how their score compares to those of other students across the country. Students will be able to see which answers they got right or wrong. They will also receive information about how they performed on specific academic skills.
Students who take the test will receive free access to My College QuickStart, an online college and planning tool that contains an online PSAT/NMSQT Score Report; a customized SAT Study Plan; a personality test; and personalized lists of colleges, majors, and careers. For more information, visit
www.collegeboard.org .
Registration for the PSAT is
due Friday, October 9 at 3:00pm in the Student Services Office. The cost for the PSAT is $20 and checks should be made payable to HUHS. The exam will be given on
Wednesday, October 14 from 7:25am to 11:00am. At the time of registration, students will be given a student guide that includes test-taking tips and a practice test.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Student Services Office at 670-3200, ext. 214 or
[email protected].
