Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

What's Happening in the South Porch?
Thanks to the leadership of our Building and Grounds chair Greg Merhar we are moving full steam ahead to get the South Porch (including the bathrooms) patched and repainted. We are also printing new parish shields (the old ones had faded) thanks to Judith McManus and Sage Wilmot. The old tract rack will be replaced with two new bulletin boards. Thanks for enduring the in between time!

Calling All Volunteers
Diocesan Convention, November 6 & 7
Thanks to those who have already volunteered to serve at Diocesan Convention on Friday, November 6 and Saturday, November 7 as greeters and hospitality assistants. This is a wonderful way to meet Episcopalians from all over Vermont as well as help people find their way around the Cathedral. We would welcome more volunteers so please sign up on the Narthex Table at the back of the Church or call the church and speak with Alyssa.
The Rev. Gay Jennings
Sunday, November 8 at 9:00 a.m. & 11:00 a.m.
The Rev. Gay Jennings will preach at the 9 am and 11 am liturgies on Sunday, November 8. Gay is the President of the House of Deputies for the Episcopal Church.

Friday, November 6 and Saturday, November 7
The 183rd Annual Convention of the Diocese of Vermont will be held at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, Burlington, VT on Friday, November 6 and Saturday November 7, 2015.

The theme for our Convention is Jazzed About God's Mission. The jazz metaphor suggests a helpful way of thinking about this season of discipleship as we seek to become more mission oriented in our life as the Episcopal Church in Vermont. The gift and beauty of jazz music is the capacity of the musicians to improvise within a structure. Today, a church that wants to engage God's mission with passion, joy and purpose would do well to embrace that same capacity.

Our special guest this year is the Rev. Gay Clark Jennings, president of the House of Deputies of the Episcopal Church. Gay was elected to her second term as president of the House of Deputies at this summer's General Convention. She is from the Diocese of Ohio and has served in many leadership capacities within the Episcopal Church and beyond. She is a dynamic leader and speaker who brings her vision, joy and love for the Episcopal Church to our Diocesan Convention. We are delighted to welcome her.

Confirmation Class for High School Students Begins in November
Message from Deacon Stan Baker:
Every other year St. Paul's offers a confirmation class for high school students 16 years old or older. We use a wonderful curriculum called Confirm, not Conform. I lead the class along with a co-leader. This year we will begin meeting in Advent. Our first class will take place on Sunday, December 6. Because so many high school students have very  busy lives, we will be meeting during the Education for all Ages time between the 9:00 and 11:00 services instead of the evening as we did in the past. We will meet weekly until Holy Week, with confirmation by Bishop Ely to take place at the Easter Vigil. I will be sending letters to all our high school students and their families in two weeks. Please contact me with questions at  [email protected] or 324-7871.
Weekly Bible Study - New Day and Time!
Thursday at 8:00 a.m.
The Bible Study group which has met on Wednesday mornings at 7:30 for 30 years, has moved the meeting time to Thursday mornings at 8:00 a.m. We are now studying Mark with the aid of Wright's book, "Mark for Everyone."  Easy reading. Copies can be purchased at the Hopkins Bookshop if you wish. ALL ARE WELCOME.
Join Us For Morning Prayer
Tuesday-Friday, 8:30-9:00 a.m.
Join us for the Daily Office of Morning Prayer in the Chapel, 8:30-9:00 AM, Tuesday-Friday. All are welcome.
Compost Team needs more volunteers!
We're the folks who gather the compost from the containers (already in bags) and get it to a large container for pickup by Casella. Occasionally there's a bit of clean-up to do. The work usually takes about one-half hour once a week, except for occasional special events. Currently volunteers sign up for one month at a time. It is one way we care about Earth (and follow our Environmental Policy), and help our staff keep our building stay clean and healthy. Contact [email protected] or 802-425-2068 if you can help. And thank you!
This Fall in the Adult Forum
Bringing Us To The Table: St. Paul's Talks about Food
This year, Lisa Schnell and Betsy Beaulieu are coordinating the Adult Forum, and we will be dedicating the entire "Forum Fall" (from September until Christmas) to a wide-ranging discussion about food.
  • We invite everyone to read Wendell Berry's wonderful book Bringing It to the Table this summer (copies are available in the Hopkins Bookshop and pretty much everywhere else).  Berry speaks eloquently about our need to be in conversation with the land and the people who grow our food, a conversation that looks a lot like the commandment to love that is at the heart of the Scriptures.  We will be discussing Berry's book together in the Forum on the three Sundays from September 20 to October 4.  On the 4th at our will welcome Abel Luna and other members of Migrant Justice. They will help us understand labor issues in Vermont's dairy industry, their work for a fair food system in Vermont, and their exciting progress. More info at www.migrantjustice.net.
  • On October 11, the Rev. Kim Erno will be with us in the Forum, speaking about his work  on issues related to migrant justice in both Vermont and Mexico.
  • What does the Bible say about food? On October 18 and November 1, we'll find out, looking first at the Old Testament, and then at the New (on October 25, we'll join with the rest of the church school in a multi-generational Sunday with Bishop Ely).
  • On, November 8 we'll turn our attention specifically toward the Eucharist: Jeanne Finan will present on the theology of the Eucharist, and Lisa Schnell will bring in some poetry that reflects on the meal we share every Sunday morning.
  • On Friday, November 13, we hope everyone will gather for a meal in the Church Hall to benefit St. Paul's Youth (SPY) and to watch the remarkable Danish film, Babette's Feast.  We will be discussing the film in the Forum on November 15 and 22.
  • The Forum will take a short hiatus on November 29, and then for the final three Sundays of Advent, will look at faith and food in all three of the Abrahamic religious traditions.  On December 6, we will welcome Ilyse Morgenstein-Feurst back to the Forum to teach us about Islamic food ways; on December 13, we'll be pleased to have with us Rabbi Joshua Chasan to speak about food in Judaism; and we'll conclude the series on December 20 with a discussion of fasting in Christianity (immediately before our Christmas feasting!).
We invite you to join us for any or all of these conversations (even if you haven't read the book!).  The Forum meets during the program year on Sundays from 10-10:55 in the Commons Room.  There's always coffee on and muffins in the basket, and you will always find great conversation!
