SERVANT to SERVANT                        11-6-15

CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations and God's blessings to Brian and Bethanie Westgate. They are the proud parents of a new son, Samuel Martin Westgate. He was born on November 1, 2015. Samuel has an older sister, Catherine, who is 2 1/2 years old. Brian is the pastor of Faith in Butler, PA.
WESTERN REGION CONFERENCE
The theme of the Western Region Conference was "You Become a Model". It was based on
1 Thessalonians 1:6-8 and was led by Rev. Russ Sommerfeld, former president of the Nebraska District.

Thirty-five church workers from 5 states gathered in Tucson, AZ for this event. It was held on October 27-29, 2015. Attendees shared in worship, prayer, fellowship and study.

During the Tuesday evening worship service at Ascension Lutheran Church, Bishop Hardy encouraged and reminded everyone of the great love that Jesus' has shown to us; which leads God's people into acts of love for our neighbor.

In our discussion time together, we shared the challenges of showing God's love in a meaningful way. This included the cultural context, which is increasingly hostile, to the institutional church.

Next year's meeting is scheduled for October 25-27, in San Francisco, CA.

REQUEST FROM BISHOP HARDY
In an effort to make the English District a more useful tool in the success of your own congregation, Bishop Hardy is asking for your help in the completion of a Church Leadership Form. His hope is to more efficiently reach out to you in a timely manner and to work with you more closely as brothers and sisters in Christ.

The form is very simple to complete. All he asks for is the contact information for the leaders of your congregation, including those individuals who serve on your church council.

NEW LUTHERAN HOME SCHOOL
RESOURCE AVAILABLE
A new resource specifically for Lutheran home-schoolers is now available from LCMS School Ministry. The handbook, titled Eternal Treasures: Teaching Your Child at Home, was co-written by Cheryl Swope and Rachel Whiting.

The 250-plus-page resource provides the foundation and doctrinal underpinnings for this type of education. In addition, it covers the how-tos of home schooling - from choosing curriculum, to keeping records, to avoiding common pitfalls - while also discussing how to incorporate the Christian faith into each and every day.
In the foreword, LCMS President Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison writes that Eternal Treasures is a "veritable powder and keg, including match and fuse, to bring a great education to your own children, today."

Throughout the book, Swope and Whiting include recommended readings, practical ideas, and essays and advice from other Lutheran home-schooling families.
"Lutheran families may consider a plethora of options related to the education of their children. Eternal Treasures: Teaching Your Child at Home will become the definitive resource for Lutheran families who are seeking to establish a quality home-school experience for their children," said Terry Schmidt, director of LCMS School Ministry. "Eternal Treasures addresses the why, what and how of home education with useful resources and countless testimonials. It is a 'must have' for families involved with home education."

Eternal Treasures is available for $14.99 on Amazon.com.
