Remembering 9/11

This Friday marks the 14th anniversary of that fateful day in New York City that shook the nation and the world. For those of us who witnessed it firsthand or on the television, this day will forever be part of our lives. Please take a moment this Friday with your friends and loved ones to remember 9/11, to remember how you felt, and to reflect on how our countrymen came together to rescue, to comfort one another, and to rebuild. From Firemen and Policemen, to military personnel, to everyday citizens, the Torrance Chamber thanks all those who fought that day (and the many that followed), and those who continue to fight for our safety both at home and abroad.

We will never forget 9/11, but we'll also never forget how much we're capable of when we work together.

Out & About
with TACC President & CEO Donna Duperron
Ambassador High School seniors engage in student-led discussion, part of the Harkness Teaching method.
Donna visits Ambassador High School
The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce celebrated the opening of Ambassador High School with a ribbon cutting as parents, faculty and community members listened to congratulatory remarks from former Mayor Frank Scotto and other dignitaries in August of 2013. This independent college preparatory Christian school opened with 27 students.
I returned to the campus two years later where principal Dr. Michael Barker welcomed 67 students to the 2015 - 2016 school year. "The vision for Ambassador High School was to create a school in which students have the freedom to live out their faith while taking college preparatory classes," stated Dr. Barker.

Class is in Session
It's that time again, time for TUSD kids to load up their backpacks and head back to school! With summer coming to an end, and school just around the corner, the Chamber's Foundation is preparing for an exciting school year ahead.
In celebration of education, the Chamber will be introducing a new Foundation program called "Educators in the Workplace." This program is designed to enable teachers and administrators to better understand current workplace expectations, to better prepare students for employment and career choices, and to provide insights for a positive and meaningful workplace experience.
The TACC Foundation recognizes that a skilled workforce with 21 st century skills is critical to not only the Torrance area's well-being and business success, but also to the success of its youth; therefore, the TACC is always looking for new ways to work with TUSD to empower its students and educators. Be on the lookout for new and exciting TACC Foundation opportunities, programs, and events taking place this school year.

The Chamber wishes TUSD a wonderful 2015-2016 school year!
Don't Forget to Take the Monthly Poll!
TACC is receiving great and enlightening feedback on its poll question this month. Thank you to all of the TACC members that have taken to time to answer this month's question. If you haven't answered the question yet, can you do it today?

Q: How has the state's mandated paid sick leave for all workers law affected your business or organization?

TACC Helps Kill State Minimum Wage Increase Bill
A bill that attempted to raise the state's minimum wage to $13.25/hr and an annual increase according to inflation thereafter (SB 3) failed to pass out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee last week. TACC had been advocating against the bill throughout the year alongside of other business groups and organizations in the state. Ultimately, TACC continues to advocate for the current minimum wage increase to $10/hr on January 1, 2016, which was approved in 2012, to be fully implemented with adequate time allotted to study the economic benefits of the policy and its real affects on poverty prior to any discussion of another minimum wage increase in the state.

SMALL BUSINESS ENTREPRENEUR PROGRAM
As an entrepreneur and former small business owner, Co-Chairing the Small Business Entrepreneur Program is a natural progression of my involvement with the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce and our community. I have real-life first hand knowledge of creating, funding, managing, marketing, and selling a business. Throughout that process, I learned many valuable lessons and most of them the hard way - learning from my own mistakes. There is definitely a lack of practical information for Small Business owners and we are filling that void with experts, open conversation and support. I am excited to have this opportunity to share my experience, and to work with the TACC and my Co-Chair Shirley Pe.
Aside from Co-Chairing the Torrance Chamber's new Small Business Entrepreneur Program,  I am the Executive Manager of Corporate Education and Community Kinship/Ambassador of Joyful Affinity with Adia, where I  provide education to businesses and civic groups designed to increase their ability to communicate, work with, and care for older adults in the workplace, community, and home.
Urgent Call to Action!
This Friday (9/11) is the last day for the CA legislature to pass bills until next year. Help TACC influence business-related legislation under consideration by contacting decision-makers in Sacramento using the information below.

SUPPORT SB 251 (Roth; D-Riverside) JOB CREATOR: Incentivizing Disability Access and Education-Seeks to limit frivolous litigation and claims regarding construction-related accessibility claims by providing businesses that have proactively sought to become ADA compliant with an opportunity to resolve any identified violations as well as provide a tax credit for such improvements. Status: Assembly Floor. TAKE ACTION!

OPPOSE SB 350 (de León; D-Los Angeles) JOB KILLER: Costly and Burdensome Regulations- Potentially increases costs and burdens on all Californians by mandating an arbitrary and unrealistic reduction of petroleum use by 50%, increasing the current Renewable Portfolio Standard to 50% and increasing energy efficiency in buildings by 50% - all by 2030 without regard to the impact on individuals, jobs and the economy. Status: Assembly Floor. TAKE ACTION!

OPPOSE AB 465 (Hernández; D-West Covina) JOB KILLER: Increased Litigation-  Significantly drives up litigation costs for all California employers as well as increases pressure on the already-overburdened judicial system by precluding mandatory employment arbitration agreements, which is likely pre-empted by the Federal Arbitration Act. Status: Governor's Desk. TAKE ACTION!

SUPPORT AB 1506 (Hernandez: D-Covina): Labor Code Private Attorneys General Act of 2004 - Seeks to limit frivolous and costly litigation against employers for technical violations on an itemized wage statement that does not create any injury to an employee, by allowing the employer a limited time period to fix the violation before any civil litigation is pursued. Status: Assembly. TAKE ACTION!
