Board of Directors Welcomes Miguel Villarreal
     
The Board Directors of California Food Policy Advocates (CFPA) added Miguel Villarreal as a member at its October 2015 meeting.  Miguel is the Director of Food and Nutritional Services for Novato Unified School District. Miguel's experience spans more than 30 years public schools as Food Service Director in Texas and California.  He has developed and implemented innovative strategies for improving children's health and "Created Total School Nutrition and Wellness Environments."   He joined  the Novato Unified School District in 2002 and begin to modified schools menus offering nutritious "Real" food  and phasing out "junk" food. 

He also serves as the District Wellness Coordinator and collaborates with numerous groups consisting of students, parents, teachers, school administrators and local\regional health-allied organizations. Miguel also works with many allied organizations to promote Farm to School programs and introducing families to gleaning to provide good, local, organic food to families in need.

Miguel Villarreal holds a Bachelor of Science in Food and Nutrition from the University of North Texas and Masters in Business Administration from East Texas State University.  Miguel is an active member of several National, State, and local organizations focused on educating and improving students' well being.

For over 20 years, CFPA has researched, incubated, and advanced real world policy solutions that increase low-income Californians' access to healthy food. As a non-profit entity, CFPA relies on its Board of Directors to govern and to lead the organization into the future. Save the Date: LA School Food Convening February 10, 2016

Save the date! The Los Angeles School Food Convening will be held February 10th, 2016. Join us to learn and share about school food advocacy, policy and action you can take to improve school meals. Mark your calendar now. More details to follow soon.

The Los Angeles School Food Convening will be hosted by California Food Policy Advocates and Occidental College - Urban and Environmental Policy Institute's Healthy School Food Coalition.

Smarter Lunchrooms Grant Opportunity 

The California Department of Education (CDE) is accepting grant applications from California school districts to support the implementation of Smarter Lunchrooms techniques. CDE will award grants of up to $13,600 to approximately 25 districts. 

Two schools from each selected district will have the opportunity to participate in the Smarter Lunchrooms Movement of California (SLM of CA), where they will be provided with technical assistance and training on low and no-cost techniques that nudge students to make smarter choices and increase the consumption of healthy foods. Grant applications are due December 10, 2015.

The SLM of CA leverages resources statewide from organizations including California Food Policy Advocates, California Department of Education, Dairy Council of California, University of California CalFresh Nutrition Education Program, Kaiser Permanente, The California Endowment, and California Department of Public Health.
