LIGHT UP THE WORLD
Winter Update

We hope you've had a great start to 2015, the International Year of Light!

In deciding to make 2015 a year that focuses on the topic of light science and its applications, the UN has recognized the important link between how light-based technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to global challenges in energy, education, agriculture and health. Be sure to check out different events that will be taking place around the world this year to celebrate the International Year or Light (IYL2015).

The past quarter has been very busy for us with multiple off-grid solar projects implemented in Peru and Guatemala and the continuation of our Solar Literacy for Kids program and Solar 101 workshops. If you've ever wondered what it's like to be part of a project, check out this video that gives an insider look into one of our recent projects in Peru implemented in partnership with volunteers from TransAlta.

Finally, we are happy to announce that we are a new partner in Aeroplan's Beyond Miles Program! If you have some spare miles in your Aeroplan account, or if your account is about to expire and you can't keep your miles, consider donating your miles for solar. Every little bit helps!

Looking for ways to stay connected to our work? We post frequent updates on  Facebook, Twitter and now Instagram - be sure to check it out.

Happy Year of Light!

Project Updates

TransAlta Volunteers Light Up The World

LUTW takes volunteers from TransAlta to Peru

In November, we completed an off-grid solar project in the remote community of Larcay with help from nine TransAlta volunteers. Watch the video above or click here to read about the volunteers' reflection on their trip and this exciting new partnership for Light Up The World.

Light Up Patahusasi Phase 2

This past September we completed the second phase of training and solar installations in the rural community of Patahuasi in Peru. Now, 60 off-grid families have access to solar home systems that power electric light, their radios and cell phones. A special thank you to Enbridge volunteers and the energy4everyone Foundation for supporting this project.

Light Up Todos Santos

Our team and six local community technicians completed solar installations for approximately 200 people this past December. At numerous times the installation teams were working in and above the clouds in this spectacular part of the world. We would like to thank TransAlta for supporting this project.

Solar Literacy for Kids: Larcay
This November we continued to deliver our solar literacy program in primary schools in Peru. The goal of the program is to help children become more familiar with solar electric systems, understand how systems are used in their homes and ensure they know how to be safe around their solar home systems and electricity.

Approximately 60 primary school students participated in our most recent solar literacy workshop in Larcay, Peru. We'd like to thank the students and teachers of Larcay, the energy4everyone Foundation and volunteers for supporting this initiative.

Solar Training Opportunities
Still one spot left! Join us for our Solar 101 workshop in Calgary. The workshop will cover the very basics of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology with a particular focus low-voltage systems similar to those that LUTW designs and installs in remote communities. The workshop fee is $45 and $25 for students. Materials will be provided and all proceeds go to support LUTW's programs. To register or get on the waiting list for our next workshop, contact us at [email protected] or call us at 403-266-5044.

Learn how to install basic low-voltage off-grid solar PV systems on your own by taking part in the off-grid solar PV training field course in the Peruvian Andes. This intensive training program includes a mix of classroom, practical hands-on exercises and site visits to technically evaluate existing installations. The program culminates with an off-grid solar electric system installation in a rural community building. Please contact [email protected] for more information.

4 EASY WAYS TO GET INVOLVED

LUTW is often approached by generous individuals who would like to help us achieve our mission, so we've come up with three easy ways we could use your help:
Help keep the lights on - we rely on monthly supporters to fund ongoing training and support for local technicians.
Save yourself some money, support sustainable power, and by using our referral code, the monthly electrical fee will be donated to LUTW.
3. Spread the word
Please Tell your friends about us and share our posts with your social networks!

4. Donate your unused Aeroplan points! Help us get project staff to projects in Peru, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Papua New Guinea and other vulnerable areas.
