WORD ON THE STREET
I learned a long time ago the best way to make something more frightening is to avoid talking about it.  When we don't confront our fears, they simply get bigger and bigger.  This is especially true when it comes to the topic of death.  It is certainly not healthy to be preoccupied with death, however our culture lives in such a denial of it that death has a ruling power over us that causes us to miss the "abundant life" that Jesus came to offer.

This weekend at Grace Avenue we are beginning a very important two week series entitled:  "Let's Face It: Resurrection People Dealing with Death".  It is based on the 10th chapter of the Gospel of John. The messages will not be morbid or inappropriate for some audiences like children.  Instead our purpose is to proclaim our resurrection faith as Easter people and confront the issue so that it no longer has ultimate power over us.

Elisabeth Kubler-Ross gave us some of the most profound understanding of death and the grief process about 40 years ago. Speaking on these subjects she once said: "It is not the end of the physical body that should worry us. Rather, our concern must be to live while we're alive - to release our inner selves from the spiritual death that comes with living behind a facade designed to conform to external definitions of who and what we are."

The apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 15 expresses it this way:

"Where is your victory, Death? Where is your sting, Death?

Thanks be to God, who gives us this victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!"

1 Corinthians 15:55, 57 CEB

I hope you will join us in this important time of proclaiming our Easter faith.

With you on Grace Avenue,

A MESSAGE FROM STAFF PARISH RELATIONS

We are truly blessed to have the staff at Grace Avenue; they make our church a special place.  They are well-educated, extremely dedicated and deeply committed.

As a small token of appreciation, we are collecting Gift Cards from the congregation in May to distribute to the staff members. Pick up a Gift Card the next time you are running around town at your favorite retail store, restaurant, coffee shop, or grocery store.  Any Gift Card for any amount will be appreciated.

Please bring the Gift Cards to church during the month of May and deposit them in the boxes located at the back of the Worship Center, Sanctuary or in the church office.  If you would prefer to make a financial contribution and let SPRC do the shopping for you, CLICK HERE to make an on-line donation.

To our church staff it is more than a job; it is their passion to serve.  Thank you in advance for your donation to reward them for a job well done.

For Hill Family:

A community family's home burned in The Trails on Easter evening.

They have a freshman son at Wakeland.  They were renting the home and did not have insurance.  They lost everything but celebrate that their family is safe.  If you would like to help this family, we are working through a counselor at Wakeland to collect gift cards that they can begin to use to replenish what they lost.  Since they are staying at a hotel currently, they do not have a place to store a lot of donated items.  Please drop gift cards off this weekend before and after worship in

the office area.  There will be  a basket designated. Thank you so much.

*If you are willing to help provide meals or transportation for persons and families in need, please contact [email protected].
