January 2016

We in the Boston area have been fortunate to have four Hadassah health care professionals visit us in Boston over the past few months. From them we learned about the challenges they face treating Israelis and Palestinians at Hadassah Ein Kerem during a time of national trauma. And they, in turn, learned new pain management standards of care by working with their American counterparts at Mass General. They returned to Israel to help create new pain management centers in Israeli hospitals. During their visit, they were heartened and inspired by the American women of Hadassah Boston and by the extent of your passion and commitment to Israel and Hadassah Hospital.

Ronit, one of the nurses who visited, is part of a mixed professional team of Jews and Arabs at Hadassah Ein Kerem.  Every day, they help to alleviate the pain of Jewish and Arab patients. Sometimes, their patients are terror victims; sometimes, they are the terrorists.

"One terrorist was badly injured when the gas balloons she was transporting to an attack blew up," Ronit told us.  "When I'm outside the door to a hospital room of a patient like that," she said, "I have to overcome my personal feelings.  The minute I walk in, I see a woman in pain a mother who needs my help.  She's a patient like any other.  My job is to reduce human suffering.  As a Hadassah nurse, I'm committed to doing that in every way possible."

If you met with our nurses, you would have been as inspired and moved by the courage and strength of these Hadassah nurses as I was. I felt the power and connection of the global Hadassah family even more when I learned that Ronit, as a child in Jerusalem, studied at the same school where I, as a young adult, taught English as a second language. Today we share even more - a commitment to the healing work of Hadassah.

As we begin 2016 I welcome the new leaders who have taken on Board Portfolio positions or program chair positions on the Hadassah Boston Board.  These leaders of our chapter are committed and dedicated to the mission of Hadassah.  Together we will offer programs that are fun and educational, initiatives that support health and medicine at Hadassah Hospital, and events that promote medical care and wellness.  We will continue to express our commitment to the wellbeing of Israel through advocacy and engagement, as well as domestic advocacy right here at home on issues and concerns relevant to women and their families.

If you are interested in joining the board and getting involved, please call me at 781-455-9055.

Wishing you a Happy, Healthy and productive year ahead.

Varda,
President, Hadassah Boston
