LPMA physician members (especially those accepting Medicaid patients), are reporting a higher than normal amount of prior authorization refusals. We have also been informed that many patients are even experiencing delays of discontinuities in care because of these expanding numbers of requests for prior authorizations, even for renewal of existing scripts that are being tapered or decreased in dose.
 
This issue was placed on the agenda of Executive Council meeting . In response, Council members  approved a survey tool for distribution to our membership.
 
The Executive Council is therefore requesting that all of our psychiatrist members complete the confidential survey using the link provided. Accomplishing this should take less than 10 minutes from start to finish. Your data will help us build support for any future action that may be needed to correct this unfortunate trend.

  Court case threatens physician-patient confidentiality
 
What if patients no longer felt safe sharing personal-yet-crucial-information with their physicians?  A case to be heard by the Washington Supreme Court threatens the integrity of the patient-physician relationship, potentially raising new obstacles to communication and trust.

In Volk v. DeMeerleer, a treating psychiatrist was charged with liability for his patient's homicidal actions in 2010. A lower court decided that the psychiatrist could not have identified the actual victims as targets because the patient had communicated no threats against them during his treatment.
 
An appeals court then examined the duty of a mental health professional to protect a third party when an outpatient occasionally expresses homicidal ideas without identifying the ultimate target. The majority reversed the trial court and ruled that mental health professionals who treat voluntary outpatients may owe a duty to protect "all foreseeable victims, not only those reasonably identifiable victims who were actually threatened by the patient." Effectively immediately: to increase the number of available Resident-Fellow travel grants to members, the Finance Committee has decreased in-town travel grants to $250 per meeting. Out-of-town travel grants will remain $500 per meeting. Travel grants applied for in 2015 that are pending for 2016 meeting travel will remain at the current travel award of $500 per meeting. Norman Lee Mauroner, MD
Norman Lee Mauroner, MD, 93, of Shreveport, LA, died at home on Friday, November 27, 2015.
 
Dr. Mauroner was a Distinguished Life Fellow of the Louisiana Psychiatric Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association. He joined the membership in 1967 and served as an active member for 49 years. He will be missed by all who knew him. Continuing reading...
